Does anyone know if this will this be available on all Packs ..

I was just checking their website and I see that it is coming soon on
    http://www.upc.ie/television/selectextrahdplus/ and
    http://www.upc.ie/television/valuehdplus/ BUT not on the

    http://www.upc.ie/television/maxhdplus/

Why would this be, given that the Max pack is their most expensive package ??

I am on Max pack, so I hope not !!

Anything that is included on a lower package is always included on the higher pack, ie, all channels on the Select or Value packs are on the Max Pack.

This is not Setanta Sports HD

It seems to be Setanta Sports SD broadcasted in true 16:9 with a graphic in the usual place for a 16:9 rather than the 4:3 area.

Indeed the box does not light up with the usual HD lighting on it, and the guide has no symbol, it is a simulcast in SD with a HD logo.

According to UPC's online TV Guide, It is Setanta HD, although the page title calls it Nat Geo HD - see here

No indication is given if the broadcasts are in HD however (checked live Champions League for reference).

    From Setanta.com
    16 September 2010

    Setanta HD

SETANTA BECOMES FIRST IRISH CHANNEL TO GO HD

Setanta Ireland has announced that it will become Ireland’s first indigenous channel to broadcast in High Definition. The Setanta HD channel will launch by Jan 2011. Initially the channel will be available on UPC’s cable platform with a launch on satellite at a later date.

Michael O’Rourke, Co-founder and CEO of Setanta Sports, said “High Definition channels have become established over the past couple of years and HD is rapidly becoming the standard in sports broadcasting. We are delighted to be the first Irish channel to make the move to HD. Sports content shows off HD at its best. In 2011 our HD viewers will be able to see their favorite football teams in the Barclays Premier League, the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Europa League. Plus the pinnacle of Setanta’s 2011 rugby coverage will be the Rugby World Cup where we will be the only Irish broadcaster to show all 48 games live in High Definition.”

Other HD content that will be shown includes French Top 14 Rugby, Serie A from Italy, Open Championship Golf and many magazine sports shows. Also, Irish national and domestic sports action will be shown in HD for the first time. O’Rourke goes on to say “We are thrilled to be able to broadcast Irish sport in HD. This will include the 2011 Allianz National League GAA Football and Hurling as well as domestic soccer action including the Setanta sports cup. It is important to thank UPC for providing us with a platform to launch the HD channel. Their support has meant that we can launch the HD channel earlier than expected and it will be a great addition to their existing HD channels.”

Robert Dunn, CEO of UPC added: "We’re delighted that Setanta will be showcasing their first HD transmission across our digital platforms and UPC customers will be the first in Ireland to experience this from 2011. This partnership underlines our commitment in using cutting edge technology to help produce and distribute outstanding content and the HD format is adding a new dimension to home entertainment for our customer base.”

Have they actually switched the HD on yet because that is the least HD channel I've ever seen.

i don't think its hd content yet , can't see any difference between normal setanta and hd channel, aand no dolby digital sound like espn hd yet ... Probably just testing .. According to press release, not due until jan 2011 ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Its broadcasting in 1080i, and the quality is better than Setanta Ireland (on my TV anyway) but its definately not HD, not to the quality of ESPN HD anyway.

Upscaling, is my guess - until they officially launch.

going live for a match thats not broadcast in HD? (none of the 3pm kickoffs are HD on saturday so far).. they will only be upscaling an SD pic then.

Do the PL organize the cameras for the matches? I was of the impression it was the TV companies themselves that sorted that out?

All Saturday 3pm games are available in HD from this season. I have seen many in HD on Polish tv.

How did the game look today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Id was in HD alright, or at least highter definition than normal! Still not as good as ESPN HD but not far off it.

It wasnt perfect tho; the score on screen looked a bit ropey and there was shadowing on my TV which I dont get with the other HD channels.

is it in HD??? the only HD channel where the little HD logo doesnt appear on the front of the box when on a HD cahnnel is this one.

I only just noticed that but at the moment it does like HD to me on Setanta, they're showing the Juve Fiorentina game from last night and the Milan Sampdoria game is on ESPN HD and both pictures look the same quality to me.

After the United game yesterday it flicked back into SD when they went back into the studio, and there was a massive noticable difference.

It doesnt have dolby digital sound like espn hd.

Its obviously a test upgrading the SD version to 1080, its a pity its not testing o sat as I could post a screenshot.

ESPN HD and Setanta HD are showing the same game at the moment ..
On Setanta HD, there is still no "HD" light on my box and no Dolby digital

I think the HD light will not come on because there is no Dolby Digital on the channel but the picture is HD.

Much improved picture during Chelsea/Everton this afternoon. Looked terrific, esp compared to its SD counterpart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Dont take that HD light as gospel anyway. I was watching Liverpool v Steaua the other night on the HD channel which had the HD light on the box and an internet stream would have had a better picture quality. It was upstreamed to 1080i but looked horrendous.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

I would blame the source for that. The Liverpool game looked horrendous on the three channels that I saw it on.

The HD Light sign not coming up, I can assure you has nothing to do with the Dolby Digital sign not being up.

Lots of carriers across Europe showing HD don't avail of the Dolby audio option for output to their subscribers/viewers.

Out of interest Mikey, did they have world-feed graphics & commentary or was it Setanta's?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 277 ✭✭Mikey23

Setanta's commentary. Didn't pay it too much attention, just flicked back & forth to regular Setanta a few times for comparison and left it on while I read the papers.

I have to ask - is it really HD though?

Compared to all the other HD channels on UPC...

No delay at all between Setanta Ireland & Setanta HD
    No dolby sound
    No HD light on box

Or is it stil in Test mode?

Does anybody from Setanta / UPC know?

    Thanks

Some of the matches are def in HD. You'll notice it when ESPN HD and Setana HD have the same match on.

I never questioned the picture quality

Also, sometimes the logo isn't in the top right-hand corner. All HD Logos are in the corner, not at 4:3 position
