Easiest way to access a HDD?

So, my old dell decided it wanted to go on fire a little while ago  and I have now finally got my hands on a new system im happy with so I want to go about recovering the data off my old hdd, provided of course the HDD itself aint damaged which it doesn't appear to be, but you never know with these things! Only looking for my documents files/college work, music and photos really. College work is backed up elsewhere no thats not overly important, music was not backup and most albums will be unrecoverable by other means and nearly all my photos are unreplaceable.

Whats the easiest way to do this? I want to get an external case and after getting my data back format the drive and use as an external for additional backup BUT, if I buy an external case for it will that alone allow me to access the data? Do I need additional software? Whats the best online retailer for this kinda thing?

    Cheers in advance!

YOU CAN buy an ide caddy, from maplins, pcworld , peats, cost20, or 25euro.
is it ide or sata drive, google sata hard drive interface image to check this.
once its installed in a caddy ,you just plug it in to a usb port, it,ll be detected after about 4 mins, windows needs no special software ,it,ll see the drive as drive, e, or f.
just click it to open, explore it ,drag and drop to copy files.
is there any burn scorch, marks on it, put some tape,on the pcb, underneath the drive to prevent short circuits, from the caddy case.
just google hard drive caddy enclosure ireland, After detecting device, it says new hardrive ready .

Cheers man. Yeah its a sata, I also have an IDE here so its good to know i just need a case for it.

I picked up a sata to usb adaptor (See link below) for some odd reason a year or so ago but when I connect it up I can see a the new F and G drive, I can access the G drive which is a 10gb partion for recovery so theres nothing of use to me on it, but when I try to access the F drive, it eventually tells me to use the drive I will have to format the disk. That would be grand if I had taken the info off it already lol will the caddy or external case do the same thing I wonder?
