    Hi all

I hurt my back recently and I went to a Dr here in Naples and he told me that I need to get an MRI of my back done. Anyway he told me in order to get it done on the public health service here I have to make an application using my European Health Number? Honestly I have no idea what this is. Anybody know what he is referring to? RSI number maybe? He insists that every member of the EU has one. As an aside and I dont know if this will be of any help but I have Plan P on the VHI.

    Any info appreciated

He means this card http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/travel_abroad/e111.html which is the European health insurance card. It replaced the old E111 form. You're supposed to apply for it before you leave usually and after a set time (3 months I think) you then fall under the care of the country you're living in.

Cheers for that. I will have to see if I can make the application from here as I wont be going back anytime soon. Also I may have to bite the bullet and go private because I need the scan sharpish according to the Dr but the cost is 500 euro and I just do not have that kind of money. If I make the application is there anything I can give them in lieu of receiving it that will suffice?

They do process them very quickly (from memory I got mine within a week of applying.
€500 would be on the dear side for an MRI. They are about €350 here now.

Once you apply online, you can immediately print out a page with your number.
