    Hi ya,

I am looking a buy windows 7 for a new system I am building. I am a student so no problem there. The issue is (and I am lucky I noticed this before I purchased this evening) that its only upgrade available. Not sure I understand the reason for this

Is there any way around it?? Am I going to have to buy an original version of XP or Vista just so I can upgrade to 7?? Would probably still work out cheaper but seems like a bit of a waste

    Anyway appreciate any advise

Ya that is where I have been looking. But was it for an upgrade you bought it or a new install. See below where it says it is an upgrade version only.

I just called software4students and they confirmed that this version of windows 7 will not install on a new system that does not already have an older version of windows.

I am not sure how this would work and how they would prevent this happening. Has anyone tried this??

check if you could upgrade from an earlier version like 2000 as it may be cheaper on ebay or adverts.ie

and if you think it's a waste, remember you can't move an OEM licence to a different machine so you would have to buy an OEM license with the new machine and then upgrade OR buy a transferable license if you received the machine without a license.

as to the logic of licensing costs and paths, Microsoft are currently taking in over a billion dollars a week

Redmond, Wash. – Oct 28, 2010 – Microsoft Corp. today announced record first-quarter revenue of $16.20 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2010, a 25% increase from the same period of the prior year.

and this is the best article I can find in it. Seems to know what he is talking about and sounds fairly sound. Think its worth chancing it.

If you're stuck and it doesnt work for you, seeing as you're a student - you could always revert to installing windows 2008 R2 server instead from Dreamspark.com for free to tide you over.
There's a couple of dedicated sites around with easy info to more or less change it to a desktop windows 7 set up complete with Aero et all - pretty bloody good it is too, I ran it myself for months on my gaming PC.

    just a reminder

Anyone can run the demo version of windows 2008 for up to 240 days
google windows 2008 workstation for other tips on how to setup desktop features for it
