TV3 news programmes now in Widescreen on DTT.

    TV3 news has switched from 4:3 to widescreen on DTT. Probably the same on Sky. The Vincent Browne special last night was also in widescreen.

    Ditto on UPC/NTL, didn't have to manually set the screen ratio.

    Is this genuine widescreen? ie are the studio programmes now originated in widescreen or is TV3/RTENL just not switching the aspect ratio correctly? Haven't seen any studio material on TV3 today. 3E don't seem to bother with correct aspect ratios at all - everything is in "stretchyvision"

    As Minstrel27 says its definitely widescreen now. Also 3e studio material such as FYI is now widescreen. Up to this you got "stretchyvision" if you switched any TV3 studio output to widescreen on a widescreen TV.

    The problem with 3e though is that the correct aspect ratio is not being determined by original programme content. Its a long running issue on the Sky platform where everything appears in 4:3 regardless of content. It's the opposite on DTT - everything seems to be broadcast in widescreen, including 4:3 material, so your getting stretchyvision again.

    I noticed that 3E were not flagging 4:3 material properly since they started on DTT last week.

    I've (since my other post) seen a news bulletin on TV3 and it's proper widescreen all right. Must have shelled out for a few new cameras then:) (or maybe they found the 16:9 switch in the studio playout system:D).
