People reading magazines in the gym

Okay I don't know if they're only in the gym for piece of mind.. But I've seen it quite regularly.

I headed into my gym during lunchtime for a 40 min workout, I started out on the crosstrainer and noticed this overweight girl on the bike behind me reading a magazine, at the pace she was going I'd say she'd have burned about 1 calorie every 10 mins... :pac:

Now I always think "Good on ya" if I see someone who isn't in great shape in the gym working hard..

It's not the first time I saw this, but on my way out about 40 mins later, I notice the same tub of goo on the same bike going EVEN SLOWER.... She'll probably head home thinking "Yeah I spent a full hour on the bike, AMN'T I GREAT..."

I just thought I'd share my hate with everyone, anyone come across things like this?

Some people would say using the cross trainer is a waste of time too!

Hand on my heart I once saw a lady on a treadmill (snail's pace of course) eating a packet of king and a bottle of coke in the holder:confused:

I was tempted to go over and ask what she was hoping to achieve in her workout

Well when i'm in the gym i watch stuff on my iPod. Reason being that, unlike a lot of people, i find the gym horribly boring, tedious and it feels like hard work.

So, if I just on the bike let's say, and i stick on an episode of my favourite TV show, i can cycle away to my heart's content and be entertained too.

This way i'm not watching the clock, i'm not bored, and it benefits my work out. I don't see the problem!

Saw a guy watching a TV show on his iPad while on a bike in the gym recently.

I mean I don't mind people watching TV and normally when I see someone catching up on a good HBO series or the like I think, "Good for you!" but the speed this guy was going at, he was going full throttle, out of breath, sweating profusely - there's no way he could have been picking up on the subtle nuances in the plot and as for appreciating the clever dialogue, no way.

He'll probably head home thinking, "Yeah I totally watched another episode of The Wire, amn't I great?"

Why do some people bother if they're not going to do it right.

And by 'right' I mean the way I think it should be done.

    Ahhhh thanks!

The sad thing is I do feel that way about good TV shows. People who sit chatting the whole way through a good show annoy the crap outta me.

    I'm such a nerd.

Perhaps if she spent less time reading and more time sweating she might start getting results. But at least she's off the couch I suppose.

This is the reason i choose to watch lighter stuff. There's no way i could watch The Wire on a bike!

I watch the overhead televisions when on the treadmill but then, I'm jogging at a reasonable pace.

Oh believe me sublety is lost too.

Although normally sublety is normally lost so subtlely that nobody notices.

Wait til you see someone updating a PowerPoint presentation while on the treadmill.

    Multi-tasking FTW!

Just don't check your emails in between lengths in the pool.

I for one don't recommend comedy whilst running flat out on a treadmill. A burst of laughter the one and only time I tried it almost cost me my face and dignity.

I really wish that you hadn't bothered. You strike me as having an utterly unpleasant & shallow life if your sense of self worth comes from mocking others.

There's a girl in my gym who's always reading a book, magazine or technical notes of some sort. She does at least an hour on the cross-trainer. Don't laugh though too soon - her weights sessions could teach the rest of us how things should be done.

Folks, there is an annoying gym behaviour thread for this kind of commentary over in the Fitness forum.

Don't get me started on people wasting benches in the gym having loud phone conversations...

What is a cross trainer? I always imagine an angry person shouting at you to go faster and lift heavier stuff.

    I don't like Jim's.
