are there any scientific studies that link higher levels of stress to how susceptible to disease a person would be? There's lots of talk all the time about stress and how sick people need to reduce stress to aid in healing, but is it based on scientific evidence or is it just something that's said to sick people so they have a good 'medical' reason to try not to worry themselves?

Oh there are tons and tons of studies and papers published that link disease to higher levels of stress. Mostly due to changes in the brain and with receptors and stuff.
Google scholar will give you tons of information
