As confirmation of our application was revealed last week yesterday for external assistance I want to get some thoughts on who do you think would make up a good team of negotiators for Irelands deal with the IMF/EU.Does it matter because do we have much to bargain with anyway? Is there anyone not involved in the government right now you would like to see brought in to the talks to give us a shot at a better deal?

Someone from Labour and FG as they will be the ones implementing it.

Senator Shane Ross. One of the few voices of reason in the last few years.

Richard Bruton. Would be good to have someone at the table who understands what the IMF boys are saying.

I would suggest hiring some of the union heads to negotiate on behalf of the state given the deals they've gotten for their members over the past two decades but remembering who they were negotiating "against" doesn't exactly inspire confidence in their ability to negotiate. For sheer neck, they'd be hard to beat though!

The problem with putting members of Sinn Fein or the Trade Unions on a negotiating panel is that are nearly intrinsically against the bailout. Now that the IMF is here perhaps it's time to work for the best comprise we can hammer out, rather than throwing our snouts into the air and simply shouting "no, no, no".

Or maybe that kind of tactic does work.

    Who said anything about Unions???,

Why on earth should they be represented? By what right should they even be let in the door?

David Macwilliams take on our leverage is interesting,I think he wouldn't be a bad choice at all.Hopefully it won't be a bunch of ff cronies anyway,a deal concerning the future of this country that won't involve them really shouldn't be in their hands.

the dff will not allow anyone but themselves to negotiate.

The secretary general of the department of finance will be the lead negotiator. He will receive instruction from the minister on whether the deal is politically acceptable enough.

Peter Matthews appears to have a good grasp of the matter and is a really good communicator, I'd be happy if he was negotiating on our behalf, along with Richard Bruton possibly and some others. As for union leaders i'm not so sure, what they did during the boom wasn't really negotiation, they had a cosy arrangement with government and got most of what they asked for without a great deal of effort, "sure the country was awash with money" as they say. Plus we need somebody who has the entire countries interests at heart, not just their members.

Is this one of the people who negotiated the special pay for themselves and 600 senior civil servants?

I have no confidence in the CS or government to negotiate anything.

Would the impending fall of government change anything about who leads negotiations?I know there wouldn't be an election until January according to most news media but whats the hurry to get this deal down if we're still funded into next year?
