I meant why does it have to be pre-87

as they have the old style plates, i.e. no 87-XX-1234?

I wonder was there ever a new Porsche 928 sold in this country pre '87? Probably not...

The owner of Barry Fitzwilliam wines had one around that time and used to park it in the garage of the wine importers where I worked then.
I used to drool over it when ever he visited us. Only took me 23 years to get my own one!

And ESI 1 is in this list of interesting Irish registered cars from the IVVCC I just found

BTW, myweels.ie got this car wrongly as a 4.5l Porsche 944 and cartell.ie only knows it's a Porsche, no type, no engine size

Im not fully up on 928 but maybe he wants a earlier one because he prefers the earlier models. Maybe certain trims levels/interiors were available on pre-87 models?

There's a lot to say for getting a pre-87 928. The earliest ones qualify for classic tax and have a non-interference engine, but are a bit underpowered. The later pre-87 ones have about the same poke as the later ones but without the more tricky electronics of the 32V engine. Also the '87 onwards S4 looks a lot more modern, something a classic car enthusiast might not want

But you missed the crucial point in link in the OP: he wants an originally Irish reg. There could only be very few of them left, if any and they will be extremely expensive compared to a same condition UK import. That's why gyppo wonders why someone would want one (unless I'm completely mistaken :D)

Also the buyer wants one in any condition and any colour which suggests it's really the log book he's after.

One of my current cars is on that list. Any idea how it was compiled?

maybe he wants a resto project to preserve some original irish history and doesnt care what color it is?

maybe if we keep trying to brainstorm each other about his intentions we will find the truth, probably not though

A few of my cars are on that list aswell. I think John just took a note of the reg of interesting cars that he spotted about the place with a particular interest paid to those with an old Irish reg.

Maybe the guy wants to restore (as in properly, not a taxbook restoration:rolleyes:) an original irish car, and thats why condition isnt too important to him.

Im sure theres many more out there like him spotting numbers, its just he went to the trouble of putting his list on a spreadsheet and making it availible to like minded (leaded)petrol heads like ourselves.

Another 944 according to mywheels: :D

    PORSCHE 944
    See Images
    Registration: RSI776
    Engine: 4.4L
    Fuel Type: Petrol
    Colour: Green

And again unknown type and engine according to cartell:

    Registration RSI776
    Make PORSCHE
    Model UNKNOWN
    Description Not Available
    Fuel Type PETROL

You'd wonder how do they get this info so wrong all the time?

    Really dont know....

It has been suggested that certain un-scrupulous people will buy an Irish registered car and switch the identity to another car of the same type ,and will probably tell everyone that he restored it himself......also he gets a whole car (if its original irish it'll probably be past restoring anyways) for parts and it avoids having to pay VRT...which on something like the Porsche i guess it would be considerable....is it any wonder poor Mr.Cowan is up the creek....:p

Sure all the 944/928/968`s are just all 924 derivatives in any case :)

Sure and half of them have VW engines and the other half have half Porsche engines, except one :D

    Misnomer!

It was originally an Audi engine - and in fact only the block. Everything else was Porsche. :)

Isnt the V8 a Mercedes design too? Or is my memory failing me?

Nah the V8 is Porsche. The autobox comes from MB alright - the later 4-speed box from about '83 is the same as the one in the Mercedes S-class of the time
