The big problem with CFL's is that they only sell the low power ones here. You can get higher power ones, but at 50 times the price the normal ones can be bought for in the UK

I've never used 60W incandescents, so why should I be limited to a direct replacement when what I want is more light ?

    A partial solution

what it does is allow you to put two CFL's into one socket

so you can save energy and still have a bright room

It would be nice to have a bayonet fitting one too - anyone know where I can get one ?
one that takes 3 bulbs in a cone would be fantastic :)

Also if you have light fittings that take expensive screw in bulbs use this adaptor so you can use cheaper bayonet bulbs instead - the BIG problem with screw in bulbs is that you have to tighten them every few months or they make a bad contact and die young (which costs you yet more)

this one allows you to use screw in bulbs in bayonet fittings if you like punishing yourself

Once upon a time in a not very far away land, whole families used to power an electric kettle and a 3 bar electric fire from these adapters plugged in to the ceiling.

Many a person basked in the warm glow they provided after overheating and burnt the house down.

If I get a chance to root around my dads garage I might be able to dig one up, if it hasn't fossilised yet

Completely agree on the PITA pityful choice of CFL here.
I brought a 25W one from the far east years ago and nearly cried when it died

I have a bc one of these in the shed, used it for years, I can't really see, provided you only use it for lighting, how it could be any more dangerous than the multiplugs you can buy almost anywhere. All the same I wouldn't go to bed and leave it switched on.

It's just plastic and metal with no moving parts

and more important it's for CFL's so the idea is to use LESS power and generate LESS heat than with an incandescent

Here and in the UK lights circuits use thinner copper than socket circuits, you'd be crazy to power anything else off them.
