I've been meaning to ask this on the motors section.

How much have/will you spend on cars over the average length of a mortgage (30 yrs)

In my brief motoring experience I've spent 7,000 euro on average per year on my car. This is all inclusing of tax, insurance, fuel, maintenance etc

    So 7,000 x 30yrs = 210,000 euro.

I know my 7,000 euro per year is definitely below average. So I'd like to get an idea of what everyone else is spending.

I've two cars on the road at the moment.

Insurance for the two is about €930.

At today's price between the two about €3,305 on petrol.

I do all servicing myself and get a trade discount so I service a car (Oil, oil filter, air filter and sparkplugs) for approx €35 a time and service one 4 times a year and the other 2 so €210 servicing.

Tax is €699 for the two a year.

Extras this year were 4 new tyres, changed the gear oil in both and changed coolant in both and brake fluid so €200 for the tyres, €60 for the gear oil and about €60 for the coolant and about €30 for the brake fluid.

So this year about €5,494 this year on two cars so thats not too bad!

How much have/will you spend on cars

Our main car is an S-Max, total costs this year will be €9K. The Mini will be about €5K, so €14K total on cars in our household this year.

But multiplying this by the 20 years on our mortgage will tell you nothing. At times we've needed only 1 Clio between us, other times we've had a 2 litre car each.

Edit: We are including depreciation, right?

I'm not going to try and calculate an exact figure, but I know that it would be a ridiculously high figure. But then again, to spend money on something you love is surely commendable. You can't bring it with you when you're dead.

You've forgotten depreciation ;) I doubt your €7000 is below average either.

    At the moment, for me
    €60/week petrol
    €1000/annum tax
    €600/annum insurance
throw in a grand for maintenance

    that's €5600/annum + depreciation.

    Edit - 12,000 miles ish

Very true, I do feel like I pay more then I should have to, but that's just an Ireland thing in general I think.

First of all, if you are talking about 30 years would need to think about inflation.
For me, the last 12 months cost about 6000 (20000 miles and about 1000 depreciation)

Inflation is usually systematicly concurrent so it won't make much of a difference to this silly excercise. Suppose we could convert to % take home pay, but then the comparrisons and readability get complicated.

Your 6,000 figure can't really be used to get the total amount over 30yrs though because it doesn't include the cost of buying a new car unless you keep your car for a long time and use the depreciated amount once it goes into negative values to buy a new car. But that's just being awkward :)

So if you apply your 6,000 to 30 years you get 180,000. Then every 5 years spend 10,000 on a newer car. That's an extra 60,000 euro totalling 240,000 euro. :D
    You've forgotten depreciation wink.gif
My calculation included deprecation and some other stuff. I lost nearly half the value of my car back in 2008/2009 :(

Lads, you're forgetting the cleaning stuff.

    Nice wax, for example!

Here's what its costing me in the US.......

Vehicle about 1K/year. (Usually a <$3K car every three years)
Repairs\Maintenance 700 a year average (high milers, I do my own work)
    Insurance 600-800 year
"Road Tax" AKA tabs (annual registration) over here is about $80/year
Fuel, right now averaging $60 every two weeks. ($1560/year)

Total $3440ish, but it depends on how you value your time I guess.

Hoping to get at least 5 years out of our current cars, we'll see how it goes. Working on rebuilding the top end in one right now (99 S80 T6), and the other needs suspension (98 V70 T5), once that's done we should be OK for a while other than tyres, brakes and other consumables.

Yeah its nice alright, they dont know how good the have it here. But then when you drive a truck that gets 8MPG to work each day what do you expect. I usually cover 400miles every two weeks, not including road trips which usually tallys another 5K on there a year.
