    2000 S40 1.8petrol.

I was driving on friday and the radio starts to flicker, then when the engine was idioling the battery light came on, gave it a bit of gas and went off. Then in traffic when i went to drive off it just died. I only changed the battery 2months ago and now the car will start if left alone for about 30mins but if I drive it and turn off engine it wont restart. it just does ......

Any ideas? Alternator problem, faulty battery? It only passed NCT about 6 weeks ago.

The battery light coming on would suggest the alternator.

Thanks, any idea of how much that would be to replace?

Have you checked the alternator belt, that would be good first step.

Yeah, the belt looks fine to my untrained eye.

If it's a standard enough alternator should be about €150 for a new one. €80 s/hand. Get it tested first to see if it's charging. Also check for loose wires at the back of the alternator. It's also possible it has one these clutch pulleys on it which do go. They're €80 to get replaced.
