Grrrrr! What is the story with rubber neckers??? Was coming in this morning on the M4. Turned onto the slip road at Maynooth and the traffic was backed up solid but was too late to turn around then. Both lanes were bumper to bumper for a at least 2 miles and probably further back from maynooth as well. And what was the cause? A crashed citroen berlingo sitting up in the bushes on top of the ditch to the left. Literally as soon as we got by that point in the road the traffic just took off at normal speed. Its been there all weekend. Nowhere near the road, definitely not a speed camera van because its clearly crashed and couldn't be driven to where it was sitting. Extremely frustrating!!! :(

Same on the N7 this morning, bumper to bumper from before Naas North exit and it was a minor bump that a Merc had been in with an unmarked squad car with blues flashing and a Traffic Corps jeep around it. The Merc was on the hard shoulder out of the way so it was purely rubber-neckers.

Traffic picked up straight away after that but only till we met the roadworks a kilometre or so later

The blue flashing lights might have had something to do with that; peoples natural inclination when they see a cop car on the road is to step on the brakes...

Yup drives me mad, getting the same now anytime there's a parked up van at the side of the road. Seems like reguardless of what speed people are doin they will slam on the brakes if they think someone is watching them. Has someone going at 80 kmph in front on a dual carrage way in a 120 zone slowing down to 40! that's right 40 KPH!! because there was a van at the side of the road .

I got stuck in that this morning too!

Couldn't believe that a crashed van was causing that amount of chaos - I'm not usually on the M4 so wasn't sure if that's the sort of behaviour to expect.

It did make me wonder how the hell the van ended up where it ended up.

That road is always slow I think, every morning I head up to Dublin for work it slows to a crawl at that exit, and fup me about 4km from the Lucan sliproad it picks up again!

It's almost impossible for this not to happen. In heavy traffic on a motorway any distraction at all and the natural tendency is to touch the brakes. It may only slow you down a bit but the person behind sees your brake lights and they do the same and a chain reaction ensues. The net result is a deceleration of the entire traffic flow until virtually stationary. Nobody wants to do it or does it intentionally and may not even be aware that they are doing it, but almost impossible to avoid. So frustrating.

Got stuck in that myself this morning, only thing I can think of is that some twits thought it was a speed camera van and slammed on. As soon as I passed it was like a switch was turned and back to normal speeds.

The NRA are planning on closing the M4 eastbound between J8 (Kilcock) and J5 (Leixlip) bewteen 8pm and 9am from 16th Dec to 22nd Dec and between Jan 10th to Jan 16th so that they can install new (unnecessary) signage on the M4. This is a disgrace-can you imagine the chaos in Kilcock, Maynooth and Leixlip during these periods? I hit the M4 at Maynooth at around 7.30am every morning and it's busy enough at these times. School related traffic builds in Maynooth from around 8.15am onwards.

I would urge people to write to the Transportation Office in Kildare County Council to object to this crazy proposal. The signage itself is a waste of public money at a time when we can not afford it and the fact that they want to close a vital commuter link during peak commuting times makes it even worse.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

They let all the amateurs out of Templemore for a few weeks for "Operation Free Flow". Or place a trainee at every junction to freeze to death, yet we still have tailbacks as they've no idea how to direct traffic so they leave it to the traffic lights that created the tailbacks for the other 50 weeks.
