Hi all, I am looking to buy a Kindle as a Christmas gift. They have to be purchased from Amazon.com and you have to chose the one that allows international delivery. Problem is, they are showing a dispatch date of 7-9 weeks from now, so after Christmas obviously.

Has anyone bought one recently? Just wondering if this dispatch date is accurate?

I find Amazon normally dispatch quicker than stated on the website, but a bit worried about risking it!

Probably due to demand there is a shortage of Kindles. You'll also be hit for the duty, VAT and charges on delivery, as it's being shipped from the USA.

Look on eBay for one. They're more expensive, but if you buy from the UK there'll be no extra charges, and they should have the stock.

I've been torn between a Kindle or one of the Sony PRS range for Christmas.
I guess that's just made my mind up for me.

If you buy from Amazon.com the price you pay is the final price as it includes duties, vat etc.

No it doesn't. Amazon.com are based outside the EU, and no VAT is included in the price.

For Kindles, the VAT will be added on at the checkout, so it will cost more than the $139 price tag suggests.

As a current Kindle and former Sony PRS owner, I would strongly recommend the Kindle out of the two. I purchased mine while on holidays in the U.S. so can't add to the shipping time question, but it is imho a far better device.

It certainly will - I just tried a dummy purchase:

    Items: USD 139.00
    Shipping & Handling: USD 20.98

    Total Before Tax: USD 159.98
Estimated Tax To Be Collected:* USD 0.00
    Import Fees Deposit USD 33.60
    Order Total: USD 193.58

Having bought two Kindles at various times from Amazon.com I can confirm that the price you pay at checkout is the final price.

For the Kindles Amazon.com adds on a chunk for duties/taxes/fees with a promise of a refund if appropriate.

The final price for the WiFi version came to 144 Euro beginning of November. Once it's shipped, it takes approx. 2 to 3 days. At that time there was no waiting period whatsoever, ordered on 2nd of November, arrived on 4th November.
Telling enough, there seems to be no shipping delay for the American market version (it shows in stock but attempting to buy that re-directs you to the international version which has the 7 to 9 weeks delay. Amazon playing favorites obviously).

Anyone know of a place that'll ship it on from Northern Ireland? Probably work out a lot cheaper and means I'll have it for Christmas. Some guy on boards with 4 posts is shilling some site but I'm not sure if I trust him - anyone actually use one of these before?
