According to the RSA website about 15 people per month are caught driving on against the flow of traffic(on the wrong side) on motorways in Dublin City alone. Is there really that many stupid people in Dublin. Thats how many are caught so surely more must do it????
    Go to:
    http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Road-Safety/Our-Research/Penalty-Point-Statistics/

    Choose a month -
Then choose Dublin City Council in the county field. And then driver in the next field.

For some reason this does not surprise me. Are there really that many stupid people in Dublin.

That is really shocking. How does that even happen? I've seen it on the n4 outside mullingar. Was heading west and a car in the fast lane was coming towards me. I didn't react, was so stunned. Could have been carnage. He probably came out of the petrol station and turned right. I called traffic watch.

But 14 seperate counts in Dublin each month! That's scary.

And what's even worse is that it only includes motorways i.e m50 and doesn't include national roads like the n4 or n11

I don't think that's 12 cases but 12 points given out for it, it's a two point penalty, so that'd be six instances, which is still high.

It's for licences issued by Dublin City Council not people driving against the flow of traffic in Dublin. Since over a 1/4 of our population lives in Dublin it's not surprising really.

Those offences are usually made by drivers reversing back along the hard shoulder after missing an exit which arguebly is not as dramatic as actually driving forward the wrong way along the carriageway (although it's still an insane thing to do).

+ 1 was going to say the same thing. I've lost count of the number of people I've seen reversing along the hard shoulder to an exit or worse those reversing down an exit ramp after taking the wrong exit.

I would imagine forigners/tourists who are used to driving on the other side might make up a large part of it. I know this summer myself and a mate were driving through Germany and every time he got into the car he had to remind himself to drive on the correct side. On one occasion he made a mistake, it's easy to happen! :o

Why not ask Jim McDaid for his personal insight into the matter.

....yes but any offences committed by those people wouldn't be registered as the points couldn't be applied to them.
