Scarves: Only worn by gay men or men who have a girlfriend/wife. True or false?

This theory suggests that if a lady on the prowl sees a scarf on a fellow, she should assume he's out of bounds.

Do people agree or disagree with this theory?

Nah, i'm 31, straight and last couple of winters would head into town on a night out with a scarf if its freezing. They aren't all pink you know, might not be the most manly accessory but i'd rather be warm myself!. Nobody gives a toss, couldnt care less if someone said something about it,which has never happened anyway. Embrace the scarf..you won't look back ;)

Normal and cold-blooded in this winter weather, a scarf is de-rigueur.

Completely disagree and it's totally unfounded.

    Cold weather = scarves

Scarves are worn by men with cold necks tbh

Never heard that before. I am gay and I do wear scarves, but not those "weirdy small ones wrapped round the neck". Have met some gay men wearing the latter, though.

I can't honestly remember any of my straight friends wearing scarves offhand... But go to all those shops for men and they're packed with scarves. They can't be just selling to the gay population, can they...?...

Let me just clarify. Of course scarves are not just worn by gay men. Straight men do wear them, but seemily only straight men who are in a relationship.

Question is: Do single straight men wear them?

I know a lot of guys who wont wear scarves, me included, but I wouldn't say this is true. What I Hate is the weird scarves that some guys wear, I call them Chris Brown scarves, Like this, they look like they are wearing a table cloth or tea cloth!

Now a neck warmer I would wear! Neck warmers are handy when you are training in the winter!

A question for you. Do you think a scarf wearing man, stops wearing scarves in between girlfriends?

    Hahaha @ thread.

I'm straight, single, but cold. The scarf stays.

    Complete and utter nonsense. Disagree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,597 ✭✭✭anniehoo

Absolutely not true and its the first time ive ever heard that cr@p. I feel sorry for lads when they cant even wear a scarf now and theyre supposedly gay.

Who makes up these rules?

Everyone, please refer to the forum charter. An item of clothing does not influence your sexual preference. Leaving this thread for now, but can't see it going anywhere.

I disagree with it. However, my boyfriend would agree. I've been trying to show him that all guys can wear scarves as he's recently gotten a lovely new double-breasted black wool coat (H&M) that would suit a manly scarf perfectly. He has a snood though, and he lives in that. €2 from Penneys.

What a ludicrous opening statement question to make and I'm probably only dignifying it be responding, but here goes, anyway...!!

Surely this means straight women are very lonely in the winter as 2 out of 3 guys surely wear scarves when it's subzero - are they all gay then??? Also, does that mean 98% of blokes who are wearing Ireland or club supporters scarfs in Aviva Stadium or at any match are gay as well???

next, you'll be saying only gay men wear leather trousers...!! :D

I have to say, I wouldn't necessarily think a straight man wearing a scarf would have a girlfriend, but I would subconsciously think he'd be the girlfriend type. Well wooly scarves, not the tea towel ones!

    False.
You can take my hat, but you'll never take my scarf!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 717 ✭✭✭dingbat

    False.

Scarves like their brethern, hats and gloves, are highly practical pieces of clothing which come in very useful in typical Irish weather.

And if we can make something stylish out of something inherently practical then that's just gravy.

I wore one for years when I was with someone and got nothing but stick from the chaps for it. Have been single now 18 months and still am wearing it. Assumed it was just the boys taking the mick but its a common thing? Now what to do, suppose I'll just risk the sore throat and influenza.

    In Ireland...maybe.

However, millions and millions and millions of straight men, both married and single, all over the continent and the world appear to have no problem wearing a nice scarf (fashionable even) when the weather necessitates it.

I suggest all badly dressed Irish men (i.e. most Irish men) take note and follow.

Only problem i have with scarves is men wearing scarves indoors, without a jacket, in a t-shirt, that just doesn't make any sense and lads obviously clueless. To tar everyone though is nonsense, maybe worry about yourself instead of judging others by your own pathetic standards, nothing wrong with a good scarf.

As Twee said earlier the thread is a breach of the forum charter. It's going nowhere and I'm locking it to put it out of my misery.

Meanwhile if anyone sees a nice silk opera scarf, white or cream, with tassles, for under €40.00, would they please PM me? Seriously.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.
