What I want to do to my little VW Polo

Hello Everyone, if this is not in line with this forum please disregard it or lock it, what have you :)

Basically, I have a 97 VW 3 door polo, no power steering and the 999cc aluminium block engine in it. What I am planning on doing is dropping a 6 speed gearbox into it and also put some rear brakes on it. Is this too ambitious? I know it will require a lot of work to do this, but I'd like to use the car for long distance driving. It's a concept really, but I think it has potential.

Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated. :)

Why do you want to fit a 6 speed box? Are you planning an engine transplant?
The rear brake disc setup from a MK2 Golf GTi should suit.

I'll look into the rear disc breaks so.
I figure that a 6 speed gear box would have a higher ratio so that when in the highest gear doing 75mph, the engine wouldn't be running at such a high RPM, saving on petrol.

I dunno man, I can potter around in fifth gear at 30mph no problem in it. And the revs are around 1,800. No shuddering or anything. This is with my 15 stone ass and my friends 20 stone ass in the car. I think it would be fine, once the momentum is there.

    Edit:
Though, in fairness, if an engine upgrade would help, I'll do that, but at that stage, moving onto a mk3 golf would be the plan. This is more of a proof of concept idea.

Bit of a crazy idea, alright. Will the 6 speed box even mate up to the 999cc engine? If you were fitting a 130bhp 1.9TDI engine it would make more sense to use the 6 speed.
I'd advise to upgrade the front brakes to larger vented items with decent pads and not bother upgrading the rears at all.

Cheapest option would be to sell the current car and get a (remapped) Polo 1.4 TDi instead.

Changing the rear brakes will make no difference. Only 20% of the braking is done by the rear, probably even less due to there being so little weight in the rear.

Six speed transmission will make no difference either. Just cause the engine is running at lower rpm doesn't mean it's using less petrol.

I often wish my 999cc Polo had a 6th gear, it would drop the revs back into the torque band at motorway speeds. But there is a lot of wind resistance to overcome at 120kph. Mine seems happier at 110kph, but I get about 56 mpg!
Have you looked around this forum ?:

How do you reckon lower revs could use the same amount of petrol? Sure it could run a little richer but I don't think that could make up for 6 or 7 hundred revs. I haven't done the maths mind but i'd be pretty surprised if fuel use didn't drop

Because as your speed increase so does wind resistance. You will need more petrol to keep the engine at the lower revs in a higher gear.

OP, unless you were getting the box and the labour for nothing I would leave well enough alone. A good alternative is to buy a diesel golf of the same era, tax would be more but if you do big mileage it will pay for itself in no time
