was out for a walk today with sammy an english pointer pup of three months and two weeks! sammy is showing great signs of becoming a good gundog!
he's retreving scented pheasant dummies and crossing large drains to retreive them, sits on hand command and whistle command, comes back using the comeback whistle call, and pointing on game and walking to heel! all this with a 3 month 2 week old pup! :D mind you i have been training him a lot and i mean a lot!
some pictures of sam taken from the phone's camera!

anyway went on our first morning walk/hunt with sam without the gun! first hour nothing interesting happening sam's just sniffing the fields back and over and occasionally pointing at pidgeons and frogs!:p remember he's only 3 months.... then suddenly i noticed sammy pointing in a more concentrated manner, i took two steps forward to try get nearer to sam when the familiar sound of a cock pheasant swept across the fields! :) was i delighted sam at three months succesfully pointed on his first cock!
few minutes later sammy led me to numerous deer water crossings
(in drains) he led me to an active deer hang out spot in a hazelnut wood in the back end of nowhere! deer scat and deer footprints everywhere!
to top it off myself and sam were coming out of the wood when i noticed a beautiful peregrine falcon hovering and gliding 40 yds in front of us! i quickly took out my phone with mouse distress calls on it in which i have
called barn owls and other birds of prey into close range! anyway the magnificient bird swooped down close for me to get a great view of it before taking off into the thick cover of the wood! if only i brought my camera!!! was a great morning for myself and sam and hope we have plenty more of them outings! hope ye like the read....
    regards Anto....

i know he's coming along nicely but will it last? ah no shots fired yet but i have been popping balloons right beside him and hardly a flinch, its supposed to be a good way to get them used to sudden noises like gunshot!!

I don't want to burst your bubble now or anything. But a three month old pup is a bit young to be walking the fields. Careful how you go at this stage he's still very young.

Its a case of too much too soon.

The sooner you get a dog out learning the basics the better, just keep everything nice and short and fun for a while and let him enjoy being a pup, it worked great for me anyway, a dog wont learn anything in a run all day

I'm with you in this one Jap. Each to their own & what works for one won't for the next but field experience young for a dog is invauable IMO. As long as The gun is at home til he's ready, he's not expected to go into freezin drains etc etc
The summer months are better for this when there's bugs for them to chase etc. Great to bring them on the rounds when checking traps, hoppers, runs. They are learning constantly.

Got some nice vids of pointer the Wkend. Will post mid wk. Got another beaut of a melanistic :)
