I'm bloody suprised at the complete lack of information I can find in Ireland about one of these.

Got it into my head lately I want a new car, and was weighing up options, and the vRS popped in, with its 1.4 Super and Turbo charged 1.4TSI, giving it approx 180BHP. And its in the C band tax, so what, €300 for the year? And apparently 45mpg.

I was looking for an approx price, and mostly what I can find is STG (now there's a suprise) but starting at £15,000 odd, I had though it would work out at about €20,000. But feck me, €25,599 starting price it seems.

It looks like the era of hot hatches are back, with GTI Polo's, Clio 200 CUP and vRS Fabia etc all giving 170+BHP.

Never had a proper hot hatch selection for the 00's, so glad to see them coming back in again.

Now just to decide, will the scally in me win out, or should I go for a sensible oul man car, like a D4D something or other.

Old diesel 130bhp VRS Fabia would have allowed you to wear both your sensible hat and boy racers baseball cap !MONSTER torque and 50(?) mpg (+)

True, but are hard to find here. €582 tax for the year as well. And the newest is 2007, which will mean NCT due next year.

The vrs is nice spec wise but there are plenty of other options available in that segment.
I might be (am) biased but I'm fairly sure the cloverleaf MiTo is in the category b tax with similar performance figures, and personally speaking I prefer its style.

Obviously there are others that are not obviously popular like the 207 gt or the more obvious mini cooper s, but they are similarly cat c or d I think and worse on the mpg

Not gone on the 207, haven't like many Pug shapes since the 306.

I like it, I particularly like the Fabia vRS Estate, which for some reason has a fast straight line speed. Wouldn't the place be dreadfully dull if we all bough the same cars.

    Yeah, thats what I'm thinking.

Fair play to you. I'm going to go with something different. I like JDM, but would never own one as a daily, the boy racer stigma is tiresome.

Cheers, haven't looked at carzone in an age, don't like its new format, its very slow.

The Corsa OPC, I'm not hugely keen on. Also take into the fact that its band E, putting it at €630 tax for the year. (And its an Opel, blech! :pac:)

Now, a St Fezzer would , but again the Band E tax (assuming its 2008, the last of the line) or €471 pre change, makes it harder to find here, as not many people are keen on that kind of tax for a Fiesta, regardless of how good it is.

I can't help but think your being blinded by tax rates. In the two you mention above there is probably €200 max in the difference between pre 2008 cars and the newer ones. God help ya if you even considered a focus ST or Mazda MPS

These's a new generic ad that with some generic pictures of LHD cars and for some reason a picture of the S2000 rally-car, but there is no in-the-flesh car; as Bertie would say "it's all smoke and daggers"

OP, if your worried about having to pay a few hundred quid a year on tax, god help you when you see the bills involved for keeping a performance car on the road!

Something like this will eat money, so if your not prepared to spend it, get a diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,995 ✭✭✭Sofiztikated

Honestly, its more to do with the resaleability that I'm looking at the tax than anything else.

To be honest, how easy do you think it would be to sell a ST Fezzer with tax of €600odd a year, compared to a Tee-Dee-RedEye Boring.

Anyway, (I had hope that) this thread would be geared towards the vRS and its good/bad points.

Since that, I've found out a bit more about the Mito (Hadn't even come into my head, tidy little motor. Would need to see it in the flesh though) and the DS3 (Which I've seen and liked.)

@kev, I've consider ST Focus's, and Mazda 6 MPS, and ruled them out. The cost of keeping/running/taxing said cars in this country in madness. I blame the Greens. :pac:

I've the 135 multiair MiTo (hence my suggestion) and it's a great little car. Same platform as the Punto Grande, and the Opel Corsa. The Cloverleaf adds extra sensors and electronics on the suspension over the standard MiTos.

There are a couple of topics over on Alfa-Owner about the VRS fabia and the real world fuel figures compared to the manufacturers. I.e. don't be expecting 45mpg if that is what they claim. I'm running between 6.9 and 7.1 l/100k (40-41mpg) real world in the 135, I'd be expecting a fraction less in the 170.

The €129 tax (currently anyway) is great value for the performance.

I've driven the new Fabia vRS and it's a cracking drive and will hopefully be my next car. 7speed DSG and 180bhp made for fairly rapid progress! There still isn't a definite retail price but I'm led to believe it will be €23,190 and have already been told I could expect €1,500 off the retail price. I've also considered the Mito Cloverleaf/Punto Abarth/500 Abarth/second hand Clio 197/Corsa OPC/Mk V GTI/3MPS/M3/S3 etc... and for some reason I keep coming back to the idea of the Fabia. To start with I've had a Fabia vRS(for the past 4 years) and even though it's remapped (170bhp/400Nm), it's been completely trouble free, cheap tax (pathetic I know), 5 door practicality, economy (>40mpg should be achievable on a run), rarity. While the looks wouldn't be to everyone's taste, I like it

While I agree the Seat Ibiza Cupra is a better looking car, it's nearly GBP£2k more expensive and I hate the interior

Edit: Forgot to mention, a remap should see approx 215bhp :)

This is more along the discussion I was expecting.

Idleater, how do you find the interior of the Mito, compared to say, a Mini? The only thing I can find comparing them is an AutoExpress article comparing the Mini Chilli Pack, the DS3 and the Mito Cloverleaf. They rate the Mini interior as the best, with the Mito bringing up the rear.

I've never been hugely keen on the Mini interior, seems very, I don't know, toyish. Although, I guess that's what they were going for. I'd love to get a good mooch around the DS3 and the Mito.

Fletch, that seems along the lines I'm thinking off, practicality of 5 doors, boot space, tax (again, I don't care what people thing, this is an issue that comes up) etc.

Compared to your current vRS, the durty dizzil, how does the petrol verson compare? Interior wise? In the flesh looks wise? Toys?

Have we anyone here that has played with the DS3?

(Side Note, I may edit the title to 2010/11 Hot Hatch options, seeing as this has gone slightly away from just the vRS, to include the Mito/DS3/Corsa etc.)

Skoda Ireland have had a blue Fabia vRS in the country for the past month - might be no harm ringing them and asking where it is and maybe asking for a price while you are at. Pretty sure they got it from Skoda UK.

The petrol is quicker, easier to get the power down and a lot lighter(at the front) and more nimble. The diesel is tricky to get off the line due to wheelspin/torque(in the wet, it takes til 4th gear before it TCS stops intervening), and very heavy in the corners/braking. I was also surprised at how low revving the petrol was on the motorway, think it was around 2.5k rpm at 70mph (helped no doubt by the 7 gears)

Interior wise, well the petrol is leagues ahead of the diesel, which is getting on at this stage. The white seats in the diesel are a total pain so it's good to see the new car has black seats. The only bugbear about the petrol is the plastic door handles which feel like they'd just snap in your hand (the diesel has nice stainless steel ones)

Looks wise, totally subjective but I prefer the diesel. It looks butcher and a lot less curvy. I'm looking forward to putting the two side by side from 30-70mph :) 170bhp/400Nm versus 180bhp/250Nm.......

    That'd a fun experiment.

Plastic door handles I'm sure can be swapped out. Where there's a will there's a way.

I've never been hugely keen on the Mini interior, seems very, I don't know, toyish. Although, I guess that's what they were going for. I'd love to get a good mooch around the DS3 and the Mito.

I looked at the mini, but discounted it because of space. I occasionally carry bikes around and other passengers and the mini really is a 2 seater with very little luggage space. Perfect if you don't need it, but I do on occasion. I also prefer the exclusivity that the MiTo brings- everyone has a mini -like Golf GTI's.

Having said that, the MiTo isn't great for storage compared to the Punto etc. it really is a more about being stylish :) The interior is nice with the carbon fibre effect cloth on the dash a welcome relief to most of the others' big lump of plastic.
The switches are pretty decent, and I have no complaints about it feeling cheap. The silver plastic trim is the only thing I'd mark down. The doors are more solid and soundproofed compared to others I sat in (mazda 2, fiat 500 as well).

The car is a lot about looks though, pillar-less doors, long nose, LED lights complete a look that you just don't get on the other cars. Park it alongside the Skoda and I'm sure that people will call the MiTo the "nicer" car, while you explain how the Skoda is better under the hood. Probably a bit like the iPhone/Android saga.

Whether you like it or not is another question entirely.

I looked at the DS3 and there is one parked nearby where I work on occasion. I like the look of them, but again I'm not sure of the Citroen style longetivity. The DS3 has the same 1.6 as the 207GT and mini AFAIK.

The reason I went for the MiTo though above the others is the Multiair engine. It really is a cracker. It doesn't need the 6 or 7 speed gearbox because there is power and torque from low down through to top end in the rev range. At the very least, take it for a test drive so you can compare.

I'll concede that the Skoda probably has the edge on feel, handling, brute power etc, but the MiTo is capable for the 99% of the actual driving I do - I have no interest in racing Porsches - I prefer annoying Mercs and BMW's that don't like "small" cars keeping up never mind trying to pass. You'd get that with any of the ones you short listed though.
