okay im not sure if this is on the right forum but im considering transfering out of arts in nuig.its not what i expected at all.im not loving the course at all im doing spanish, geog, psyc and soc and pol.i was hoping to do spanish and geog, geog was 1 of my favourite subjects in school and i ws thinking of picking spanish as i thought a 2nd language would be a bonus for job opptunities, but was never great at languages, got my honours in irish and french just not sure if i have the knack for languages.i was considering repeating the lc but i accepted arts and i regret it big time.ive always been unsure what i wanted to do but now i know that id love to be studying a more science based course such as nursing, generals science and then go into physiology but in paticular id love to study biological and biomedical science.i love biology but never knew this course even existed(terrible carreer guidence in my school,i blame myself as well for my wrong decision, basing my college choice on where my friends are going is a bad idea!!!!)i know most the info bout transfering,if i drop out before jan i have to pay half fees.i can deal with that as i have half that saved and if i worked throughtout the summer i could save the rest.my main problem would be my accomadation and father.my lease is for the end of may with 500e deposit. i was considering trying to get a job after i drop out up in galway or at home and paying the rent or trying to get another tenent??also my father would hit roof if i dropped out but if i could make up most of the money myself for fees next id say he'd come round.the only real prob is the accomadation.do you think i should talk to the propiters about replacing me with another tenent??i dont want to lose my 500e deposit.or should i just finish my degree in galway and not put me and my family through this financial strain??

I'm sure you don't want to hear this but I would talk to the career guidance person in NUIG before you do anything. That being said, I don't think there should be a problem as long as you are willing to pay your way and not expect your parents to pay for you.

You should probably work on getting your basic English up a bit before you consider third level education.

did you sign a lease with the landlord? pop into the SU or the accommodation office in Aras Ui Cathail, and see what you can do.
if you can, have a chat with the landlord, tell him your situation, see if you can get any leeway from him regarding the deposit.
do it soon anyway, cos there's some minimum notice length (2 or 3 weeks iirc) that you have to give your landlord before moving out, though i'm not sure of the situation if there is/isn't a lease

Definitely agree with calling into the SU and the career guidance offices.

I'd also say that 3 or 4 years is a big commitment to do a degree you don't really want!

Fairly sure NUIG apply for full term fees when they do apply, and it's well before jan.... basically, they don't operate on the same "you can drop out before X date", so you could have to pay full fees for one year.

I dropped out of NUIG first arts just there a week ago and I have to pay 50% fees next year,it depends what course i do though the fees vary. You have to talk to them in the arts office and the fees office(they basically try and talk you out of dropping out but if you're determined to leave ignore them cause unless they get your name down as withdrawing you could be stuck for full fees:eek:) and then fill in a form to withdraw in the student suppport place in Aras Ui chathail. If you're sure you don't like arts I don't see the point in sticking at it you'll just end up more pissed off in a years time! The fees and what you'll do all year with the rest of the year are the only real issues but like its your whole lives so you should do what you think is best..!
    Good luck:D
