L-plates on a car driven by a full-licensed driver

    Hi,

can anyone confirm is it illegal to display L-plates on a car when it is driven by a full-licensed driver?

I am learning to drive and have l-plates on my car. However, my husband has a full license and also drives the car. Should he be taking the L-plates down when he goes to work every day??

Have seen posts by other people commenting on people driving unaccompanied with L-plates up - which is what my husband would look like to another driver.

If it's okay to do here is it also okay to do whilst driving in Northern Ireland?

There is no legal requirement here to remove L plates if the driver has a licence.

As far as I know, in the UK they must be removed unless the driver is an instructor etc.

(You could get the magnetic ones to make it easier for your husband).

OP, I have a full licence and I drive my mother's car (who is also a full licenced driver), with L-Plates up - my brother is a learner driver.

I've never had any difficulty with other cars treating me different. As I'm an 18 year old male, it probably gives off the impression that I'm an unaccompanied learner, but I don't go to the effort of removing the L Plates as I'm not doing anything wrong, per se (perhaps being unfairly misleading to the surrounding traffic, but again, I have doubts as to how much notice they pay to L Plates).

The L Plates I have are those Window Cling ones, and despite their name, don't cling to the windows that well unless you pre-rub the area with a J Cloth or similar, which is a lot of effort (but I am lazy!). I have magnetic ones but they don't stick properly so I usually don't bother with them :P
