Had a hunch we were putting a bit too much petrol in the car. Let me know what you think

    This week:
    €20 petrol
    15 litres
100 miles later the needle is back to where it was.

15 litres = 3.3 gallons by my calculations

So that works out at 30.3 mpg everyday driving short distances.

    That's not much is it?

It'd want to be some sort of supercharged Micra that saves lives and gives head for 1 mile per gallon.

You don't mention the age of the Micra so I will assume it's a couple of years old, I'd say this one does early 40's mpg, the automatic model is likely to get only early 30's mpg as it will stuggle with the 1 litre engine.

Using the needle is not the best way to measure fuel consumption. What you do is this:

Fill the tank up to top, noting the mileage,
Drive till almost empty, then fill up to the top again. Recalculate the mileage again and tyhis will be far more accurate. If you do this several times this will be even better.

    sorry, 2001 Micra.

How do you know when you've filled a tank to the top?

hey i drive a 98 1.0 automatic micra and i was concerned about the mpg i was getting (20 - 30) so i wrote a program to keep track of it. Ive attached it as it could be of use to you. On average i get 25mpg on short trips but if i go on a longer drive it does go up to 40 sometimes!

    edit: i get between 220 - 260 miles on a full tank.
during the summer i had some filter changed and that also increased the mpg slightly.

Fill slowly until the pump clicks off.

Micras (up to 2001 /2)are stunningly reliable motors but mpg isnt their strongest point 45-48mpg(42-45 average? ) is about the BEST youd get and I suppose if you drove the 5hite out of it it MIGHT dip into the 30s ...Jap Imports tend to be worse and automatics a LOT worse ...my mam has a jap import auto and it eats petrol and shes no Schumacher!

When it wont take any more petrol...:D

It's an automatic so fuel consumption will be lower than manual anyway.

Thats about the same sort of mileage I get from my Type R Integra. Either youre driving style is awful or there is a problem with the car I would imagine...

Hey, Ive been driving a 99 Micra, manual for about 2months now and im seriously worried about the miles per galon im getting out of her.

Worked it down to be about 22 mpg, and its costin me an absolute fortune. Im not exactly driving hard or anything.
Any ideas what might be the cause?

    Im no mechanic :p
    Thanks

Driving it in city traffic with constant stop start might result in this. You should first check all tyres are correctly inflated.
