Hey guys, I've been trying to find out if you can still play games like Day of Defeat and Counter-Strike before the switch over to Source? I'm guessing they aren't available anymore, none of the sites I've visited seems to have any information or files :/

I know this isn't the exact forum for this kind of question but since it's the one used most often, I thought I would give it a try.

Also, if you know any good sites for download pre source Half-Life mods?! :pac:

Ah....you have to pay for CS now? I thought before it went to Source it was free no?

It was a free mod for half life, you still had to have a HL CD key. I suspect if you have a valid HL CD key you can register it on steam and you should get CS and TFC automatically.

I bought and downloaded HL from Steam just there now. May look into getting the other mods for it.

I think I bought the HL1 Anthology for about €5 awhile back on one of their crazy sales.
You can get the Valve complete pack for £53 or the HL pack for £27.

If you own an old copy of Half Life you can register its CD Key to Steam and you will get all Valve GoldSrc games.

Wait, now I don't play CS but wasnt this CS 1.6 still free? I mean there must be a free version of cs people play that you can play if you own HL1.

Counter Strike has been in retail circulation since 2000, it has been a commercial product since that time. CS 1.6 was an update released in 2003 to coincide with the games move to the Steam platform.

I bought CS with Condition Zero, was 4.99. Just bought Day of Defeat for the same price. Svenmod is free though as is Vampire Slayer, now that takes me back.

I'm obviously wrong but I thought there was a version of this mod that was still fully free. Like garrys mod was free up to version 1.bla bla but to upgrade to 2.0 you had to pay......for example.

Anyway didnt you get CS source free with HL2?

    Yeah... your wrong :)

You've always needed a copy of HL1 to play CS and HL2 to play CSS. You can buy them seperately on steam tho. they're very cheap anyway.

I'm aware you need to own a copy of Hl1 alright but he's talking about having to buy CS itself, which I know for a fact was free for a time due to it being a mod.

I was talking about whatever version was the last one before it went commercial and wondering if people were still playing that and/or if its still available.

Considering the play time you'll get out of them, surely they're worth a few bob?

yeah... im pretty sure you need the actual game to play a mod created on it tho ;) And no, even if you could get your hands on a 10 year old beta, there would be no1 playing it.

Well holy jaysus:rolleyes:, why are you even telling me this? You may as well also say
"im pretty sure you need to buy a PC to play a mod of a pc game tho ;)"
    or
"im pretty sure you need pay for electricity to power your pc, to play the mod of the game tho ;)"

    WON was shutdown ages ago.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Opponent_Network
Valve shut down the last of its WON servers on July 31, 2004, officially killing the remnants of WON. All online portions of Valve's games were transferred to their own Steam system. The announcement disappointed some of the long-time Half-Life and Counter-Strike players who held it in high esteem for being, at the time, more efficient in terms of speed and system resources than Steam.

After the shutdown of WON, some players continued to run a patched version of the retail versions of Half-Life or Counter-Strike, which connects to a WON replacement called No-WON (or WON2), and allows users to use the original server browser to connect to Half-Life servers, and their various mods (including Counter-Strike 1.5, and a Steamless version of 1.6), much as they could before WON's shutdown.

Since its shutdown, users who try to connect to WON in games such as the retail version of Half-Life would receive an error message, for example, claiming that the game client is out of date. However, since November 1st 2008, the date that the WON servers were taken entirely offline, the client will simply time out while trying to connect.

list of WON2 servers online now

... jesus, make up your mind. If you consider having to buy HL1 to play cs free... then its always been free. If you dont.. then its never been free.

Either way unless you get a hacked version, your going to be out of pocket.

Most pointless agrument i've ever had on boards... you've probably never even played the game !!

LOL what a random thing to say. Of course I have and this is one of the most pointless discussions I've had also, which is all on you for needlessly trying to be pedantic with failed attempts to childlessly go "neer ner neeer ner neeeeeee ner, your wrong".

Make up my mind? I've only ever been talking about CS, which has been clear from all my posts, and the fact that you need HL to play it goes without saying. Just like the fact that you need to pay for a PC to play it goes without saying....

Mods are free, naturally you must own the game that the mods are for.
