Help. Dose anyone out there have any knowledge with an alfa romeo 156 Tspark 1.8 cambelt change.
I took mine to a mechanic and supplied him with the cambelt and kit and the correct oil and filter and asked him to also change the oil. 2 hours later and im back on the road, happy days. Then 3 days later the engine sounds like a bag of rusty old bolts and dies, so I check to make sure the belt is ok and found it intact.
After doing a bit of home work on the net I found forums on alfa romeos and the correct procedure on cambelts and locking them in position, my mechanic uses tipex. Will this cause the cam variator to make the loud rattle if the timing was done with tipex and guess work. He has collected the car but should he stand over his work.

Of course he should stand over his work, wait and see what he reckons the issue is.

Is it not suitable to do the timing on an alfa twin spark by using tip ex. You need alfa cam locks. The timing is probably out. The variator should also be changed with the belt but won't cause a noise during driving only when starting up.

The old alfas are so expensive to do belts on. I remember my mechanic doing my belt on a 156 I use to own. The specific cam lock tools kind of takes the mick compared to doing a belt on a normal car:p

Sounds like your mechanic made a balls of it.... You really need a specialist working on your car when you have an Alfa.

The camshafts need to be locked in position with the locking tools, the camshaft sprockets can rotate on the end of the camshafts and should only be tightened in position on the camshaft after the belt has been tensioned.

Where are you based OP? I'd take it to someone who knows what they are doing tbh. It sounds like your mechanic has made a balls of it.
