Ford Focus 2008 Estate (revised shape) - Water leak in passenger footwell, advice?

My Ford Focus 2008 1.5 TDCI Estate is going fine except for an annoying intermittent water leak in the front passenger footwell.

It has been to the dealer 3 times and still not resolved.

    They have checked:

    - The pollen filter, heating system and area around it
    - The seal around the door
    - The pipe leading to the rear screen wash
    - Hosed it for several hours and no leak in the garage.

It does not always leak in wet weather.

I am beginning to think it’s occurring whilst driving and the car is kicking up water. Other ideas are that I park on a slight incline and this is causing the leak because of more of a slope in one of the internal draining channels or around the pollen filter.

All ideas appreciated? I am going to give them one more shot at it leaving the car with them for 2 days in December, I raised it under the 2 year warranty so its still covered as it was never resolved.

PS: For foreign people googling (Outside UK & Ireland) the car is right hand drive so the leak is in the left side footwell.

Are you losing coolant at all? The last time I saw a leak like this it was coolant from the heater matrix but you do say they've checked this.

No loss of coolant had it in for a service last week and this was all checked.

Some Focci had problems with water ingress around the rear tailgate hinges, but I think that was the hatchback and can't see how it could make its way to the passenger footwell anyway. Sorry for your trouble, can be incredibly hard to track down what could be a very small leak.

    More stuff here...

    Has it a sun roof?

If it has ever had a pollen filter change that is certainly where I would be looking.

had the same problem in an older ford focus.
The problem was the pollen filter cover i.e the plastic bit at the top of the bonnet/against the windscreen - the seal had broken and was leaking - but only the odd time during very heavy rain.

Anyway I replaced it with a new type (which has another little "shelf" underneath it to throw the water off but I also siliconed it to the windscreen!
and I havent had a problem since.

i used to come out to an inch of water in the passenger footwell :)

This is the part I am talking about:

Thats the old focus, the new one is located in a different place altogether which the OP has. Im putting down €50 that he has a sun roof, If he says yeah well then Im on to something:pac:

I know some of the later fords suffer with leaks through the door membrane. They sometimes get air in the sealant that holds the foam membrane in place, so it creates a missed spot, the water has been known to run down the membrane and into the car through the gaps.
Costs nothing to take a panel off and check the sealant.

I'd bet money that is where your leak is coming from.

    Thanks all for your replys.

    In answer to your questions:
    - Car does not have a sun roof, its a style basic model.
    - Pollen filter was never changed

In the new focus the pollen filter is in a really awkward site behind the radio and the whole dash has to come apart to to get in at the back of it.

Car has a Nokia car kit CK-15w behind the radio that't the only addon since manufacturing.

It is awkward to get to but dash doesn't need to be taken apart. I done one, legs out the door job though :pac:.
