    Hey chaps,

Bit of a newbie to Linux, have played around with it for years but never to much in connecting Windows with Linux.

Anyway, I would like to be able to Remote Desktop from my Windows 7 (64bit Pro) to Fedora 14 (32bit). Is this doable?

I have Googled it a fair bit but haven't got much back that I can get my head around. I followed this guide but wasn't able to "execute" the programs without errors.

I have VNC Enterprise on my W7 box and the free version on the Fedora box.

    Any help would be great!

    Cheers.

Coming from a windows background, i sympathise!
I used to use logmein to connect to my computers as it just worked. While it isnt on linux, i found a very good replacement. It is called teamviewer, and is free for non commerical use.

Have the same working here at home.

On Fedora there is the option to enable remote desktop in the System menu either under Preference or Admin, I enabled that and then opened the relevant ports for vnc using the Firewall program, 5900 off the top of my head.

On the windows side I have installed tightVNC and can access the Fedora machine no problem inside my LAN.

I use x11vnc rather than vncserver as it allows me to view the current desktop.
It's useful in a situation, say, someone is logged into the current desktop and needs remote help with something.
Afaik you can't use vncserver in that situation.

Steps to set it up include:
    1. Installing ssh server and client on Linux PC.
    2. Installing vncserver on Linux PC.
    3. Installing Putty on Windows PC (presumably any ssh client will do).
    4. Install a vncviewer client on Windows PC.
    4. Opening port for ssh on router.

    Usage.
    1. Connect to linux PC using Putty (or other ssh client) on Windows.
    2. In the terminal start xllvnc
    4. On Windows PC open the vncviewer client (the server is the IP address with :0 added)
    5. Voila you should now see your Linux desktop on your Windows PC.

    Security.
Once you have the connection set up and working you should then ensure you secure it.
    1. Create public and private keys on your Linux PC.
    2. Configure your ssh server to only accept public key encryption.
    3. Copy public key to Windows PC and use it to authenticate connection to Linux PC.

Thanks for all the above guys, I've been out sick the last few days. I'll give all these a go and see how I get on and will let you know! Cheers! ;)
