she had checked online and it said the stick works with ubuntu10.

I have tried vodafone usb broadband in ubuntu9.04 for some time.
    But it worked at last.

You should try ppp(not sure) to connect, just like the ADSL dial up.

I am sorry I can not give you information.

    Hi.
Without knowing what type of stick it is,no-one can help you.
It should be written somewhere on it!
Post up as much detail as possible, and we'll see where we can get to.

You just say she got it in the US, but I'm not certain from this whether it's a 3G type mobile modem, or just a wifi stick. If it's a 3G modem from a US provider, it may not work here at all even if it's unlocked - it may not run on the same frequency.

Another necessary detail is the actual Ubuntu version.
There is no such thing as Ubuntu 10.
There was an ubuntu release in April 2010 - 10.04 ,
and another one recently in October 2010 - 10.10

There's a big difference in simple 3G support between the two.
The reason for this is that the modems are mostly the same as each other,
but as each new one is released, the list of ID numbers must be updated so that the operating system knows which driver to use.

An experienced user can force them to be detected, but you shouldn't have to get involved in that just to get online!

Worked for me with ubuntu 10.10 but not with 10.04 so if its 10.04 you're using try updating through the update manager application. Good luck!

From what I've found, Ubuntu 10.10 seems to be much more compatible with USB modems compared to 10.04. If you haven't already updated, you should give it a go
