Amazon - Free Super Saver Delivery?

    Hi folks,

I've bought a fair bit of stuff from Amazon over the past few months and I have always availed of the Free Super Deliver option.

However, I'm trying to buy a laptop from the site, and it's charging me P&P... this is what it says underneath the laptop description...

Price: £424.99 & this item Delivered FREE in the UK with Super Saver Delivery. See details and conditions

Indicating that delivery is free? I know that it says UK... but doesnt the deal apply to Ireland too *provided you've spent over 25 blips?*

On top of that... as you will see from the description in bold above, the list price for the laptop is £424.99, but when I go to pay for it... the price changes to £437.65 as per the example below:

    Items: GBP 437.65
    Postage & Packing: GBP 7.07

    Order Total: GBP 444.72
    Payment Total: EUR 543,24**

So instead of the laptop costing me £424.99 it's now costing me £444.72?

Is there some sort of WEEE charge going on or something? And does the Super Saver Delivery not apply to laptops when destined for Ireland? I bought an electric toothbrush, with free delivery, so it can't be for just electronics :P

    Thanks in advance...

Yes, i believe that it is sold by Amazon. As requested, link is below...

Should me more transparent if they're knocking on Vat et al?

All prices on Amazon are VAT inclusive so that shouldn't be the issue.

Ireland is not classed as being part of the UK, but as part of Eurozone 1, which includes the likes of Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and a few other Northern European countries.

Amazon sellers that ship from the UK have additional charges to ship to Eurozone countries. If you go into the seller pages, you can view their shipping rates, that will let you know what charges are being applied.

I am surprised that you are being shipped a laptop from the UK via Amazon, they often can't ship certain Technology products to Ireland.....

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response - appreciate it.

However, the seller is Amazon, who are offering the free delivery and when I click on their T&C's re said free delivery, this is what it says...

Super Saver Delivery to European destinations

Customers in the following countries can get free delivery for orders over £25 on eligible items.
Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Andorra, Finland, Gibraltar, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Vatican city, Poland.

Bar the whole P&P thing, I still don't understand the the mysterious jump in price, when the item is placed in the Amazon basket!

I like buying on Amazon - I generally find them very transparent with excellent customer service. Speaking of customer service... I'll email them now to see what the craic is... probably something simple!

The price chage is becasue Amazon show the price as with UK Vat but when going to the checkout it knows you are in Ireland from the delivery address so they charge Irish VAT rates.

Just had a look at the product page - nice machine!!

The only thing looking at the terms and conditions was this:

"* Eligible items are those purchased directly from Amazon.co.uk, excluding gift certificates and certain electrical items (where this is stated on the item's product information page). If your order qualifies for FREE Super Saver Delivery, you will still be charged a delivery fee for any ineligible items in the order.
    "

Didnt see it stating anyplace that the item didn't qualify for SSD, at the same time - didn't see anything saying it did qualify to SSD to Europe. It may not be an "eligible" item, even though its value is over £25.

Sure let us know how you get on....

    .

All amazon prices are inclusive of UK VAT. However when a business does over a certain amount of trade with Ireland every year they then have to charge Irish VAT rates to their Irish customers.

I've often noticed that when buying electronics from amazon that there's a small jump in price from what's advertised to the price appearing in my checkout .I'm sure others have too.

There's an a small IE addon program written by someone using boards.ie that let's you see the euro price inclusive of Irish vat on amazon along side the sterling UK price when you're shopping there. It let's you know what your charge will be before you go through the checkout. If you search bargains alerts you'll probably find it. It can be very handy.

I'm not sure if amazon include a WEE charge now. Does anyone know?

Aaaah - didnt dawn on me! UK VAT rate is 17.5% and we're 21%. The difference is set to close on 4th of Jan next as UK VAT rate goes up to 20%.

Thats assuming that the Irish rate isn't raised on Budget day!

Thanks Nava - that's one mystery solved!

I can't remember them changing the VAT before on any other items I've purchased previously. However, this is the biggest purchase I've ever made on Amazon so I've probably just a case of me never noticing the incremental price increase on lesser valued items! :D

It's been like that since the year dot, except on books, which have no VAT. It would be easy to miss this change on an item for £10, but would become very noticeable at £400.

This is why I love I love Amazon and their Customer Service (grab a coffee)...

    Dear XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk with your concern.

On reviewing your email, I understand that the price of "laptop" has jumped from 424.99 GBP to 444.72 GBP when you reached you final page of your order. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding and inconvenience caused to you.

While I can appreciate that you would likely prefer a short answer, your situation is a complicated one that requires some explanation. I've done my best to address all of your concerns as clearly as possible below and I thank you in advance for taking the time to review the entire e-mail.

I can confirm that Amazon.co.uk is registered for VAT in UK and Luxembourg. The VAT number for the Amazon.co.uk in UK is:

    GB 727 2558 21

Furthermore, as you are already aware, I would like to inform you that, when you purchase an item on our website, the price you see initially is the price that includes the rate of VAT applicable within the United Kingdom which is 17.5%.

This VAT rates is applicable for all items except for books.

If your order is marked to be delivered to another member state of the European Union, we will re-calculate the price during the checkout process of your order by taking the price of the item, excluding UK VAT and adding VAT at the rate applicable in the EU member state. Since VAT rates differ widely within the EU, the final price of your order will often change to reflect the VAT rate that is in place in the EU country of destination.

The cost of the item on our website is 424.99 GBP which includes the UK VAT. Now as the cost of the item is 424.99 GBP which includes UK VAT, we will first deduct the UK VAT costs (17.50%) from this amount, so that we can obtain the original cost of the item.

Suppose the Original price of this item is = x.

Equation to know the original cost of the item : Item price divided by 17.50% i.e., (424.99/117.50)* 100

    Therefore, original cost of item is = (424.99/117.50)* 100 = 361.69 GBP

Now we have to add 21% of Ireland VAT to the original cost of the item.

Equation to extract Ireland VAT: 361.69*21/100

    Hence, 361.69*21/100 = 75.954 GBP

Ireland VAT is = 75.954 GBP

Total Cost of the Item is = Original cost plus Ireland VAT

Total Cost of the Item is = 361.693 GBP + 75.954 GBP = 437.65 GBP

Therefore, the cost of the item price appearing on your order is correct and you'll be charged for the same.

Regarding the postage and packaging charge for this item, please note that large electrical items are not eligible for free super saver delivery.

As the item you wish to purchase come under large electrical item, it is not eligible for free super saver delivery, that is why the postage and packaging is charged when you reach you final page of your order.

Hence at the final page of your ordrer, the item price will be given as 437.65 GBP and postage and packaging is shown as 7.07 GBP, total landing upto 444.72 GBP

To learn more about Super Saver Delivery in Europe and to view the related terms and conditions, you can visit our help pages at:
