Where did Graphic Chipset Driver come from?

So I'm using salvaged HP PC, using 2 1/2 HDD, also salvaged and OEM copy of XP Pro , also salvaged.

Problem: been suffering slow screen build, I get the outlines of things, icons, windows etc, but they are just empty outlines and one after another the content arrives.

This A.M. I did "driver update" inside "Device Manager" for "Graphic Display". think I accepted the default setting it went about it business, and after a minute or so it stated to show the icon for files moving from one place to another.
So, now PC is much better, So question where did these files come from. I presume there on the HDD, so why was a less capable driver in charge until now?

Intel Graphics Controller 82865G. What peeks my interest is that if I do a new OS install that I don't appear to get the best graphic driver on the setup disc, or did I

You probably did get the best driver on your disc, most graphics drivers are updated from every few days to weekly, I have had my pc 3 years now, and the graphics drivers have been updated 270 times. Also if your installing XP the drivers could be up to ten years old.
