Bad yield was not the only disappointment for Russian potato producers in this season. As of today, farmers face more serious task, which is to preserve quality of produce. According to data of survey conducted by “Fruit-Inform, approximately one third of producers from Central Federal District encountered a problem of quick sprouting of tubers connected with unusually warm autumn. For the most part, it concerns storehouses lacking ventilation and refrigeration.

Drought- Affected Production of Other Crops in European Russia Other crops that suffered from the drought in European Russia are fodder crops, grasses, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables. Production of potatoes, Russia’s second staple food product after bread, is forecast to decrease by 30 percent from last year to 22 MMT [vii] . However, recently the government lifted import duties on potatoes, cabbage and buckwheat, and expects potato imports to increase up to 4 MMT.

I reckon I could grow a hundred kilos of spuds in the back garden.
