    Hi all,

I recently got a new work notebook, a Lenovo T410.

I am limited in what I can install and uninstall which is a pain. I travel alot and end up having to bring 2 laptops.

I was talking to someone about this problem and they suggested that I should take out the cd drive (dont need it for work) and replace it with a hard drive, install a new OS for my personal use.

Is there a lot involved in this? Finding the drivers would probably be an issue.
I think its a pretty decent laptop and would like to use it without all the software it got slowing it down.

Anyone on here done such a thing? Things to look out for?

    Thanks

ask the IT people at work, and check your terms of employment as many have causes about stuff like this

they have no control of your hard drive, if it can see the files on the work drive then it will bypass any antivirus or other security on the work machine

If it is just web browsing then inux on a usb stick -

+1... you may p1ss off your IT people if you go ahead and install a new hard drive... They will probably have disallowed your user from installing software so that there is no chance that you will install pirate software on the laptop...

Why dont you put together a list of the software you need and bring it to the IT dept, and see what they can do for you..

Run off an external USB drive IMO. It's not /that/ different to having a 2nd laptop.

edit: Or just ask for admin priviliges on that laptop. If you're travelling your IT department may be understanding (mine are for example).
