Irish Rail 'zones'

I get a monthly student ticket for my commute between Phoenix Park and Pearse Station. On the ticket it reads 'Ticket Type: LEVEL 3 OUTER - FEEDER' and 'VALID BETWEEN ALL STATIONS IN ZONE'. The only reference to 'zones' I can find on irishrail.ie is the 'Short Hop Zone' in which the smart card works. How far does 'level 3' go?

    extract from : http://www.railusers.ie/passenger_info/ticketing.php
    Dublin region ticket zones explained

The pricing structure and validity of many weekly, monthly and annual tickets is expressed on a zonal basis in the Greater Dublin Region. Tickets are valid for all journeys within specified zone. The details of these zones is not available in recent timetables for reasons unknown.

    Zone List

Inner Short Hop: Rush & Lusk, Maynooth, Hazelhatch & Celbridge, Bray and all Luas services
(Outer) Short Hop: Balbriggan, Maynooth, Hazelhatch & Celbridge and Kilcoole
Medium Hop: Gormanston, Kilcock and Sallins & Naas
Long Hop: Drogheda, Enfield, Kildare and Wicklow
Giant Hop: Dundalk, Mullingar, Tullamore, Portlaoise, Carlow and Gorey
Fares for the Short Hop zone may be found here

I wasn't aware of any tickets that worked on both LUAS and Irish Rail. Looking at the railuser.ie list of tickets valid on LUAS, I don't see one like mine, but mine has the word 'feeder' in 'Ticket Type' so it seems like it's valid on the LUAS. What a pleasant surprise.

You should not need a Luas on this journey between Phoenix Park and Pearse station so having Luas on your tickets may mean you are paying more than you need to?

There is only one Rail Only Monthly Student Commuter ticket in Dublin - it is valid on Dublin Bus Feeder services 90, 145 (To Leeson St), 102, 111, and 114 and all Iarnrod Eireann trains to Maynooth, M3 Parkway, Balbriggan, Howth, Kilcoole and Hazelhatch.

It is not valid on LUAS.

There is a separate Rail/LUAS ticket.

Just because Luas is in the zone, doesn't mean that your ticket is necessarily valid on Luas.

The Savoy cinema is in the zone, but you wouldn't expect you ticket to be valid there, would you.

While yes, it would be good to be able to get from any DART station to any Luas stop and vice versa on a single ticket, that generally isn't possible yet.

I thought it would be valid because the word 'feeder' was there. The link I posted earlier seems to indicate that if the words 'incl. feeder service' are on the ticket it is valid on the LUAS. If you guys say it isn't, I'll take your word for it.

    I don't see why not.

I don't understand why integrated fares aren't in use in Dublin.

A service like the Oyster card in London could be introduced and extended to cover costs other than transport, such as admission to cinemas, theatres and other attractions.

It would involve some imagination and joined up thinking for it to happen so I won't hold my breath.

    .

Because this is Ireland and nothing works properly.

I mean the feeder buses don't even feed the DART anymore, 11x were feeder buses originally, how many are even left and those that are, 111 & 114 are useless as feeders as there are so few of them, most of the drivers look at you like you have two heads when you ask for a ticket through to Tara street etc
