Ok. so i need some information on this. i am possibly setting up a small business next year. ive got fifteen slot machines, and i have my eye on a fairly nice space for them in a decent enough location in town. I am very uninformed on the ins and outs of a business like this though. Would e35000-e40000 for start up be enough(excluding the purchase of machines) or would more be required? i have also been told i might need a gaming licence for each machine, and that it cannot be called a casino, only private members club. i also have no clue as to what other laws are associated with this type of business. Any input at all would be extremely helpful, especially from one who might already be in the business him/herself. thanks in advance.:)

Having worked in an Irish 'Casino', I have some insight into this for you.

You cannot legally call it a 'Casino'. They are verbotten in Ireland.
    • It is a private members club only. You need to get new members to join with photographic ID and by signing a form with their info.
    • You are very unlikely to get a alcohol licence.
    • The most I ever paid out of a machine was €7,500 - bear in mind the punter put €7k into that machine, that day to win that amount.
    • The biggest earner in any casino is the automatic roulette - this machine costs in excess of €125,000 but you won't wait long to get that back.
    • Your cash on hand should be sufficient.
    • AFAIK - you have to have a gaming licence for the premises and a tax cert for each individual machine, but this is the one aspect of the business I never got involved in so I'm just assuming here.
    • Don't underestimate security - it is very important. People get angry/violent when they lose a lot of money.
    • Keep a clean house. Don't allow beggars, borrowers or lowlifes in. Try to keep the drunks away from the poker tables it annoys the other players. Try to keep the exceptionally drunk out altogether - they are a nuisance to everyone and more hassle than they are worth.
    • Try to limit the involvement of the Gardai in things you can handle yourself. It doesn't look good to have your business name in the weekly crime roundup in the local rag week on week.

Will you have dealers and live tables or just machines? Just machines is an arcade - not a casino.
Do you mind me asking where the casino will be based?

Get as good a CCTV system as you can afford. Cameras with high enough resolution to distinguish faces, covering every part of your premises are essential. Visit a few other places in similar locations elsewhere in ireland, see which places are busy, work out why, then copy the ideas. I see other arcade owners coming into our place regularly, and machine suppliers often take them in here too to show them their machines in operation.

Going to the trade shows is very worthwhile

is the next one, you can quiz plenty of people at that
