Buy a new car. Or something from here

They have them in maplins and halfords too, but a bit more expensive.

They have them in Lidl and Aldi sometimes, got one a few years ago from Lidl for just €5

Don't depend on them though. Anywhere remotely near danger point (3 degrees) and modify driving.

Problem is, thermometers in cars aren't exact ...they won't tell you if the road is frozen or not.

They read accurately enough when the car is parked for a while, but while driving, with the wind and warm air from the engine temps could be over or under reading.

At no point will they give you the temp of the road surface ...and that's what really matters.

Do people really need a guage to tell them if the road might be frozen or not? Surely its not that hard; if you feel that there is any chance that the road might be bad adjust your driving accordingly. I would never rely on a temperature guage to tell me how I should be driving.

Won't you drop around to my house each morning and let me know what the temp is outside. :D

    Thanks.

Edit: just thought about that. If I give you my address, you will drop around to borrow tools, drink my beer. etc. And we can't have that now.

I find the opposite. When the car is parked the heat of the engine permeates through to the sensor and causes a high reading. It becomes reliable after a couple of miles driving.

In the manual of my last volvo, it said thermometer readings will only be accurate (questionable) once driving. I noticed a few times when starting the car from cold, the thermometer would be way out and only start reading correctly when i drive for a minute or two.
I think the sensor is way up in the wheel arch or somewhere else well hidden, so wind doesn't get at it, nor does engine heat.
