Shane Ross and Irish Rail

I heard Shane Ross on the radio this evening getting interviewed about decrepancies in Irish Rail accounts. He mention kick backs with links to the Drumcondra Mafia. Irish Rail had a spokesman on after who started with a personal attack on Ross having too many jobs before defending Irish Rail. Is this the new FAS?

Can you elaborate on what Ross said, or link to a story outlining the detail? Its hard for us to comment when we don't know the detail.

IRISH RAIL have been accused of burying a report which concluded a potential €8.6 million in taxpayers’ funds was lost through cracks in its contracting systems and through fraud.

An independent accountancy firm told Irish Rail in mid-2008 in a draft report that it had found the "historic loss," but the CIÉ group told the consultants that it had strayed outside its terms of reference.

The subsequent report by accountants Baker Tilly Ryan Glennon (BTRG) on Irish Rail found that almost €2.5m was lost to the group through problems with procurement methods and fraudulent activity.

Certainly the Drumcondra mafia had their fingers in many pies, including the children's hospital at the Mater and DIT moving to Grangegorman, both of which seem to have a certain amount of fudge associated with them.
