Oil burner & thermostat

I'm running a oil fired central heating and hot water system, and trying to keep costs down so I've turned the thermostat down low 1 to 1 1/2 on the dial. The house heats reasonably well but I can hear the boiler fireing up a lot, due to it getting colder. I've been told that this is not good for the boiler, constantly fireing up and then going off, and that I should turn it up a bit (say to 2) that it will not actually use that much more oil.

To be truthful I'm more worried that what I have been told is true and that I may be damaging the boiler, any thoughts on this?
