I'm playing a competition tomorrow and i decided to put some time into the driving range before the competition. As i was hitting along (not satisfyingly but acceptable) , i remember one evening down in Leopardstown recently, an auld fella walked up to me and told me a little tip. So i tried to do this today, basically on the short irons that i should be coming down on the ball from the inside...HOLY CRAP...my regular 9 iron went around 140yards, normally 115ish...my 52 gap wedge was right on the money at 100yard, normally 70yards...and so on from LW to my 6iron...all went alot further than i normal hit...

    Cant wait for tomorrow!!!:)

Youd probably get the same results coming down on the outside. The "secret" to that tip is "coming down"
If you dont hit down with your irons you are sweeping and possibly even adding loft. Hitting down delofts the club and turns a PW into a 9 or 8 etc.

Yes in theory that by hitting down delofts the clubs and turn a PW into a 9 or 8 but in my case they flight was much higher than normal so it wasn't so the case of being delofts, i think it just that coming in from the inside and on top of the ball gives u a sweeter impact...well for me!

    Well its not really a theory...its a fact :)
The ball flight wont really be higher (unless you were not hitting your irons properly at all before?) but the shape will be different, teardrop rather than a flat parabola.

Impact is a function of closeness to the "sweetspot" , the angle of the club head and the direction the clubhead is moving in.
Basically you want middle (for most irons), square, square.
How you get to the impact zone is largely irrelevant, its what you are doing when you are there. Hitting the ball on the way down is the key here.
