The follow-up phone call?

If you have submitted a job application and there has been no response after a certain amount of time from the prospective employer, is it advisable to phone that company to get an update on the recruitment process?

    And if so:

    (i) How long should you allow before phoning?

(ii) What exactly should you say in order to convey your eagerness to land the job without sounding too desperate?

    Thanks for the replies.

I would be interested in opinions on this.

I would think a follow up phone call after about a week if you haven't had any response would be no harm. I'd be phrasing it like, 'I just want to check that you got my application/email.'
Hopefully they won't just say the position has been filled... but at least you'll have an answer or an interview.
