If by 'He gave it to me' you mean a permanent transfer, the music that's on the iPod is or was on his PC in his iTunes library. If you connect up to a new PC and install iTunes from scratch, you will have an empty music library and the first time you sync. with the iPod it will be wiped clean, it doesn't do a two-way sync.

before syncing it download sharepod, it will transfer all the music to your computer

Dont synchronize it, choose option synchronize manually , so it wont delete stuff that is already on the ipod.

same outcome as using sharepod, in the end he'll have whatever songs he wants on the ipod
