Hi guys im wondering if anyone might be able to help me with a heating problem i am having. I have oil heating but recently when i switch this on the trip switch goes.

This now happens each time i turn it on and is unusable. I have a firebird oil heating system. I wondering if there is anything simple i can check before getting an electrician.

Im also not sure if i need an electrician or a plumber to fix this.

    Thanks

Check if the thermostat on the boiler is up full. If so, turn it down to 70% or so.

I had this problem last year after getting boiler serviced. Idiot service engineer hadn't got a clue, but the internets fixed it for me.

I would suggest getting an engineer in to service it. Have you had it serviced in the past couple of years?

Edit: Is it the trip switch in the fuse board that's going? If so I'd be getting a spark in to look at it - don't take chances with electricity.

yep stimpson it is due a service. It is the trip switch in the fuse board that's going everytime i turn in on. Im not sure now though wheter to get an electricion or the service engineer.

Get a service man. Sounds like the pump is shorting or a cable has touched a hot surface at the boiler and has melted, exposing cable.

    Get an electrician.
If it tripping breaker in fuse board it could be cabling issue, pump, short circuit in stat........

A good electrician should be able to identify compotent that is failing and replace it. (But he may draw the line if its a componet in the boiler).

A Plumber ( and some boiler service engineers) may not be able to identify electrical problems with house wiring.

+1. By the sounds of things you are dealing with an electrical fault, and you will need an electrician to find and fix it for you.

This happened to me 2 years ago and it turned out to be the pump that was causing it due to condensation dripping onto the housing and seeping inside. I fitted a new pump and problem solved.

However, it could be one of many things, e.g., recently a faulty timeswitch caused my MCB to trip and this switch had to be replaced with a new timer to cure that problem.

Remember that there is electricty and water combined to make your central heating work so its a highly dangerous situation. Whatever you do (and calling in a sparks/plumber is the best option), be careful.

    Hi guys

had an electrician around and he said the burner is gone which was causing it to keep tripping. He is going to try and get a part im just wondering will this be an expensive or a big job.

    Thanks
