How are the HT leads, sparkplugs and coilpacks? Could be lots of things really. Best case is the above failing, worst case is loss of compression imo.

Fairly p1ss poor diagnosis to be honest. Agree with all Confab's post.

Agree completly on the diagnostics,40e jobbie from a polish chap, think he would have been better sinking the 40e into a proper diagnostic from the main stealers.Would they be able to isolate the problem from their more thorough diagnostics?.

Pull each plug lead individually to check for spark would identify is it electrial, compression test is a 10 min job for any chap with a tester.

Will get him to that, keep you posted, thanks for info guys.

Did the mechanic give you a fault code,
my guess on a rover is a P0301-p0304 with head gasket gone wetting the plug on the cylinder in question.
I would hope your mechanic would be able to at least rule out a coil/lead/plug fault

Those are misfire codes and can be something simple and electrical. Like a coil, spark plug or lead.

    What he said.

We had an old fiesta that constant went to 3 cylinders as a spark plug would get fouled with oil. Used to check all the leads for a spark then swap out the plug that didn't.

I'm pretty sure any mechanic would have checked all of the HT components and been able to rule them out pretty simply.
I'm just stating that from experience on these k-series lumps a p030x code is most commonly a damp plug from failing head gasket or if its a p0301 possibly inlet manifold gasket.

45s were all fitted with the green inlet manifold gasket I think, rarely fail but not impossible.

No water coolant loss,if he goes back to the guy who done the diagnosis should he be able to give him these codes,if he can he may as well get them and i can throw them up here, will go through his plugs and leads and see what we can find.

From the details you have posted the chap who did the diagnosis is a complete and utter bell end. I wouldn't ask him to diagnose a boner in a stripclub.
