Sorry if this has been asked before or is in the wrong place.

I have been referred to an oral surgeon by my dentist for the extraction of a wisdom tooth, there is no room for it to grow out of my gum so it needs to be removed.

Unfortunately i am out of work, i have a medical card, but with the new rules of the HSE that dont cover any dental costs, i am wondering is this the same, will i have to pay a big amount of money for this, i didnt think to ask the dentist at the time, i really dont have money to be spending huge amounts of cash on this, hopefully someone on here who knows can help me.

    Thank you

Had it done a couple of years ago.

** mod edit no names ** clinic were the the best price i found after trying a few places. You may be able to haggle a bit if you tell them your current situation.

non specialist dentist charging specialist oral surgeon prices

    • Wisdom tooth extraction (lower) (tax deductable) €250
    • Wisdom tooth extraction (upper) €150

Thanks for your post But at those prices, it can stay were it is, i dont have that kind of money, even if i had i wouldn't be able to throw it away on that,

    €250 + 300 sedation, rediculous.

I was of the opinion that if you are referred to a public hospital there are no cost for anyone unless there was an overnight stay required and definitely none for a medical card holder. As for the medical card covering no dental costs, I'm getting my wisdom teeth out by my local dentist under the medical card(two out so far) and 2 fillings in.

No names allowed, also that clinic does not have a specialist oral surgeon on their web site.

Thanks for the comment, that would help alot if i was covered, i think i will just go ask my dentist when im passing by, see what he says. I'll update back here with a reply for anyone who may have a similar question in the future.

If you need to have your wisdom teeth removed and you have a current valid medical card you are entitled to have this treatment done through your medical card.Your dentist just has to send a letter to your local health board and you will be put on a waiting list with their oral surgeon or hospital of their choice.Mind you their can be a long wait before getting an appointment..
