Yep my ears pricked up at that utterance from him. Obviously the Government are preparing themselves for an election after the budget and before the other outstanding by-elections.

Fair play to him going on the show tonight especially when so many other members of the Government shyed away from attending given the list that Vincent quoted off at the start. He is getting an absolute roasting from Vincent at the moment. He is working from a well rehearsed script by the look of it as well.

Fair play for going on? You serious?

He's paid by us and it is his duty to explain the government's decisions.

Look he must have known he was going on for a roasting yet he turned up unlike a lot of his colleagues, senior ministers who decided to stay in the shadows. He is only a junior minister.

Now I don't agree with what he is saying because he is clearly working off a scripted position trying to maintain the fiction that the Government (well FF because the Greens have just disappeared from the scene in the last week) have spun over the weekend and for the last few days.

I know what you're saying but I don't think he deserves any fair play or credit for appearing on a talk show programme and getting tough questions.

An FF member said that ? That's reason enough for me to believe there won't be one "in a few months".

Hopefully before Christmas; we live in hope.

Thought it was a farcial show. .

Firstly I spotted the Peter Power comment, a slip of the tongue and I think its one thing the government cant keep avoiding (an election). .

Browne missed a good opportunity to properly analyse Power. He was tongue tied and couldnt even explain his "alterntive" to the bank bailout. Professor Honohan was quoted by both sides and Brown was as ignorant to Power on what Honohan said as vice versa.

In truth, while it was no doubt enjoyable for most watching an FF TD take a major spit roast on TV, it was a very unconvincing and dissapointing display by what amounted to be an over zealous Brown, who missed a good opportunity IMO. "are you ashamed?" "do you think you screwed the country?". What exactly did this achieve? Might aswell throw tomatoes at him. . I know we all want heads to role, but we wont create a better society by looking for FF to be thrown to the stocks. A more mature nation would ask intelligent questions and be able to provide credible alternatives or counter views. . That show was just a mockfest . .

As for the other panelists, I liked the UCD guy who did paint a fair picture regarding our forefathers and what they fought for and I agree completely that its sad that we are at this juncture. However like the lady from the Irish Times (who actually couldnt articulate an alternative other then to speak of the mental impact it will have), he was unable to provide a credible response to "what is your alternative". In his defence, thats not his area, so he gets a pass . .

What worries me as much as the damage this government is doing, is the expectancy from most that the country will be better run by the new boys. . While FF made a right Fk up of this country, I have seen nothing to fill me with hope on the other side . . What is true, whoever it is and whichever party they are from, this country needs a true , honest, intelligent and fair leader.

Don't think vincent was letting him answer either to be fair. Still, if he was given the chance I'm sure he wouldn't have given anything other than the party line anyway.

Thought vincent left himself down a bit. As the presenter I though he should at least remain calm. He was certainly entitled push power hard but getting angry as he did just made it easier for Power to avoid the questions.

Is he always like that? Don't watch the show much.

Interesting one about why the people of limerick should vote for him. Can't think of any reason why they should. I haven't seen him do anything around limerick or, more importantly, nationally.

I would be more concerned with the people who would potentially vote back in the likes of Bertie, O'Keefe and Coughlin . . Politicians with nothing to offer our national interests... Perhaps if the cock ups and inadequate intelligence could cost a local authority, people would think twice about re-electing inappropriate people.

Indeed. We need some real politicans. Where or where will we get them? Any chance that the Krauts will throw in a few good politicans with the 80 billion bail out?
We could pretend that they are Irish by adding an O or Mc to their names. eg Adolf McHitler or Erwin Van O Rommell and so forth. I'm sure they could russle up a few fake passports as well( everyone else can).

I'm not sure whether I'm ashamed, depressed, embarrased or angry at whats about to happen/happening to this country. Maybe all four. I just hope we all learn from it.

One final thing about Mr Peter Power, his answer to the question "Why should the people of Limerick elect you at the General Election" highlighted what is wrong with Politics today. He said I have 2 major roles...went on about representing them at a National level then which is fine, its what his job should be. He then went on that he dealt with local issues which is what is exactly wrong with our politics. What has turning the sod for a local school got to do with NATIONAL POLITICS!

We have to move away from our National Parliamentarians getting distracted by local issues and then not giving their full attention to legislating for the whole country.

(I know I harp on about this but from my perspective it is at the heart of what is rotten with our country and its Politics today)

To those that didn't see Vincent Browne's behaviour on Wed night, it can be summed up by the fact that his programme finshed nearly 5 minutes early!! Amazing.

Who was on, what behaviour was it, and what discussion caused this ?

If it benefits them, and they can get away with it, they do it.

It's a mechanism for them to manipulate voters into feeling a strong connection for a loyal, community-concerned politician. It's effectively advertising - morality out the window.

Oh I know that. That is why I harp on about the list system all the time these days.

It's exactly what happens when early in the history of the State the Government completely dismantles and neuters local Government. TDs are the main local politics people because of this. It's a joke of a situation but TDs are just responding to the situation on the ground as it is before them.

Couldn't agree more. It was his duty to go on the show. At least he is giving us our monies worth.

    Great show.

I can empatise with those feelings (and not because I'm of the female gender). My friends who stayed in the UK from the previous mass emigration of the 80's must think we are a joke, for the last few years all we talked about the price of houses and now we couldn't even get a decent price for a second hand bike.
