Black Ops Single Player

Just thought I'd start a thread for this as all the others just seem to be talking about the multiplayer.

Finished it last night and enjoyed every single second of it. Probably one of the best storylines I've played in an FPS in a long time.

    MAJOR SPOILER
That shot of Mason in the crowd before JFK's assasination just made perfect sense and was a great twist to end on. Mason was brainwashed as part of a sleeper cell to plan attacks in the US, using the numbers broadcast presumably as their directives of when and where to attack (JFK in Masons case). Also loved the fact that Reznov had just been a figment of his imagination since Vorkuta (although there were some parts of the story that couldn't have happened if he wasn't there - the helicopter door underwater being one example).

Everything was done well in this game. Vehicle sections were brilliant
Hind attack on the POW camp and the battle up river in the boat being 2 standout examples
. The characters were well developed over the course of the game and well designed (that scene with Reznov sitting by the flames talking to you was eerily realistic looking). Is it just me or did anyone else think Woods looked exactly like Ben Stiller in Tropic Thunder??:D Also loved the fact that the gore made a return, resulting in some genuinely brutal looking scenes and melee kills thorughout the campaign.

Its definitely up there with MW as being my favorite COD ever, and one my favorite FPS as well. Every level was a blast to play through and its one of the first games in a long time that I've started again straight after finishing it.

So what are your views on the SP?

Kowloon aside I loved it, great looking level, huge frustration. Agree about the nasty gore as well, when you
kill the VC guys in their hammocks and instead of stabbing them he saws his way across their necks with the knife, brutal stuff
could have done without the cutscenes interupting some parts of the levels though, you're running along then it jumps back to being in the chair with more crazy visuals although
the final level wandering through the Pentagon was fantastically done, espcially as the level itself starts crumbling away, reminded me of Arkham Asylum

You didn't enjoy Kowloon? Thought it was a great level. As for the gore, I had 2 favorites
dragging the guy off the boat and nearly carving his head off underwater, and the tomahawk kill on rebirth island :D
    .

Eh there was one section of it that drove me nuts, the running about on the rooftops was cool, oh and the endless respawning enemies on the Vietnam battle level, stupid game design.

Loved the SP, worth the price of the game alone. Every level was amazing to play, fun, cinematic, challenging and well structured. Well....except maybe Kowloon, didn't really like that level, but that was the only one. The mission set back post WW2 playing as Reznov was a fantastic unexpected addition to the game and story. Definitely the best Call of Duty single player campaign to date. Some of the set pieces and interactive cut scenes were simply amazing. I think Resnov and Woods are my favourite in-game characters out of any COD game too, Treyarch did an excellent job, while World at War was a great game, nailing down characters was an area it fell totally flat in....but they more than made up for it here.

All in all, far more looking forward to Treyarchs next COD game than Infinity Wards in terms of Single Player. Black Ops exceeded even my wildest expectations.

Still playing it at the moment.
One aspect I adore is the bullet time sequences when you crash through a window or whatever. So awesome!

See the thing with Black Ops, and with COD as a whole, is that its basically the same game over and over, its all being pushed down a linear path until you hit a trigger point, some vehicle/horde of enemies will appear and you have to hold down an area or use some new weapon that will magically appear. Its all getting very samey. Its like you're interacting with a movie most of the time, theres no choice to deviate from a fixed path at all, not once throughout the whole game. In an age of open world and sandbox games its starting to show its age as a franchise, but at the same time I do love the cinematic feel to it, if they got more of a mix of levels it might freshen up the series, some fixed, some completely open world like a massive battle level where you have multiple things to do but in no order and hae consequences should you do something wrong.

The problem is, dynamic and cinematic aren't compatible. With the linear nature of the game, you loose the inevitable triggers for huge set pieces. I don't think that's a bad thing, as the games are being more and more film like, and with some particularly breathtaking set pieces in Black Ops. It's what I've come to expect from Call of Duty. You lean towards Sand Box, you've got a different and more flexible game, but one very different in nature. I like my versatile games at times, but the very reason I love COD just as much as I love games like Fallout for their open ended nature, is for that strict linearity, roller coaster ride from start to finish.

Maybe fresh scenarios is the answer, they did make a good effort in Black Ops with the helicopter section, which was excellent despite being incredibly linear.

    Is that in
Vietnam? There should be Napalm barrels you can kick down the hill. Makes it a so much easier than killing thousands of VC like I did first time around :D

Finished it last night. Was a fantastic game. It got a little bit crazy near the end but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Found the Khe Sanh and Hue missions brilliant. Will have to play the second time around - will start again today. :)

    SPOILER***********

Anyone find that at the end when you're chocking the bad guy that you have to repeatedly press each analog fast, which makes you thug the controller back and forth and simulates you ACTUALLY chocking somebody :p
Probably what Treyarch intended but I thought it was more twisted than infinity wards airport shoot up :D

On the linear aspect of it, theres a youtube clip of a chap completing the first level (on PC) without actually firing a shot

on another note genuinely loving the single player i dont know if id be saying its better or worse than MW2 there 2 very different story lines so hard to compare

throw a nice few twists in there as well though dont they

I'm racking my brains here. When Mason says (to, I'm not sure):
"I should have confirmed the kill" (of Dragovich I think) at Balkouner, Russia when you're with Woods.
I cannot remember that scene. I've had a quick look online but can't find anything and I won't be able to play the level for at least a week. Any ideas?

That happens when you are on the mission to stop the missile launch. When Mason & Woods are viewing Weaver on the platform just after he's captured, Dragovich and Krevchenko are there. Mason wants to take him out then and there but Woods says it will jeapordise them being able to stop the launch.

Oh yes. That's making sense. I'll replay that mission. Thanks DarkJager!

Finished the game on veteren , other than the second part of level 4 , which was down to lack of patience on my part , it was a bit of a let down challenge wise. Interesting story line though.

I'm still trying to get the achievement for it :D Using only rockets to get to the POW camp, a lot harder than it sounds.

Anybody had a look through the Intel yet? Very well laid out and quite descriptive, kind of tells its own story for each level.
