Avoid early models - gearbox eats itself.
Later models are probably much better.

cheers defender is that because of the 11.1v lipos that they are meant to take. But is it a good m4 to invest in???

very hard to find and replace hop units and gear box shells cause of them being different than most models, i have two older models in pieces in a box, the newer ones may be better.

We reviewed the current KWA M4A1 & KWA KM4S on Oddysairsoft and they are nice, I liked the KM4S so much I bought one and I haven't had any trouble with it. Two points to note:
    1. Initial hopup response was poor so I swapped it and now it has really nice range & accuracy
    2. DO NOT use 11.1v LiPo in these AEGs or you will have problems. KWA specifically state you should not use 11.1V in 1Joule versions of their AEGs, 7.4v LiPo/9.6v NiMh is what's recommended

Never had anything more than a 9.6V batter in mine. It probably only ever fired a few thousand rounds.

The power level was shocking on the early ones but was fixed by changing the cylinder.

It's pretty much an exact clone of the TM M4 but as Audie says - the hopup unit is non standard in that it has a groove along the hopup and nozzle which mean it needs KWA parts as opposed to stadard V2 bits.

I discovered the crack in my gearbox and could never get a replacment for it. It, like Audies' is in bits in a box and I've used the top half of the receiver and front end on a TM SR16 that I have which had broken pin lugs (to keep the top and bottom of the receivers together at the back of the gun).

I love the quality of the metal finishing on the body. One of the nicest around. That said - the cybergun version, although the same internals I'm sure - is not the same body as the old KWA OEM versions.

Havent really seen many lately but by all accounts - they are still very nice.

Me - I wouldnt get one after my initial experience. Once bitten...

Audie - I'm pretty sure I have the hopup and nozzle and maybe a few other bits knocking about. If they are any good to ya take em foc.

I have the KWA Defender 4 AEG and it is fantastic. Great range and accuracy and great internals. I had no problem with changing the hopup and with fitting a tightbore barrel. A friend who knows a lot more about AEGs and hwo they work had a look inside and said they were some of the best stock internals he had ever seen.
I bought mine in February of this year so it is possible that I am talking about a newer model to the ones the guys above are talking about. Mine takes an 11.1 lipo no problem and shoots like a demon but I tend to use a 9.6v because I just don't want to take any chances on screwing things up. I love my KWA way too much to risk damaging it.
If you check out online reviews you will be hard pressed to find a bad one. A great purchase for the price I think.

i have 3 kwa m4s,one of the early ones and two of the new ones

the early one was bought as they arrived in mia and it worked perfect untill the famous gearbox crack happened, however it was around six months after i got it,it was skirmished twice a week every week, and i didnt have the best trigger finger so it took some abuse, got the gearbox replaced and its still going strong today

the two new ones have never given any trouble at all, both chrono right at the one joule every time and range is very impressive

i run 11.1 lipos in the three of these kwa's

i would not recommend a 11.1v lipo, ive recently fixed one up that the owner was using the lipo in and from what i gather i was installing its third gear set and a new gearbox shell, as the front of the gearbox cracked off.

Gear failures are common, cracked gearboxes (always at the front), I've had a few where the spring retainer on the switch had broken, sending it into the gears and locking it up, wiring melts, aye, 11.1V lipos are too silly.
8.4V make it run silly enough...

were the new gens aegs not supposedly fitted with a revised gearbox casing?
