Quick one guys,i bought a tdi passat 2weeks ago as i needed fuel economy for a change,im just wondering what bhp it is?Its just a standard tdi,no red in it whatsoever. Also i was driving a toyota soarer before this so im used to power i was thinking of getting more power for the passat, any advice or idea on cost and would it affect my fuel economy which is so important?

Your Passat TDi has a mere 90BHP.
The Redi ones have are usually 110BHP, and some of the GT versions have up to 150BHP.
I used to drive a Prelude V-tec, but 30 MPG was costing me a fortune on petrol.
Now I drive a TDI 90 BHP. I get over 55MPG and on a long run over 60 MPG:)

So dude, do you want fuel economy or excitement?
    The choice is yours alone.

    Happy Driving:)

a remap is where you should start if your looking for more power. it wont effect your MPG, actually it will, your MPG will increase slightly if you drive sensibly, which will be hard to do after a remap, but there the facts.:pac:

remapping a 90 BHP VAG engine should give you somewhere in the region of 105-115bhp and increases torque significantly, sorry cant find the exact figures at the mo

    GT tdi passats now? :D

Only way of knowing your cars true BHP is check the data sticker in the boot, pay no heed to red letters or lack of red letters its all nonsense.

Remap for more power circa 400e.

Handiest way to get an extra 20 bhp from a passat TDI 90 bhp is to go along to a scrapyard and get the injectors from a 110bhp engine. The injectors are the only difference in the 2.

can you remap a 98 passat? i was sure they where the old rotary pump system with little electronics involved? if so one way to get more power would be to screw out the pump and boost.

You ca fit the old resistor type tuning box to them but it's not a good idea. Can cause excessive smoke and in extreme cases diesel wash into the sump. The weak spot in the passat is the gearbox. Once you start upping the torque 3rd gear will eventually start acting up especially if there is 100k plus on the car.

This would only be the case if car has been owned by a boy racer who likes to tamper with the "i".
Genuine passats 01-05with red "i" have 130bhp. Its actually 96kw on boot sticker

Not sure if this is the case. Later model 130bhp passats 01-05 have beefed up engine blocks ie heavier wall thickness, compared to the 90- 100bhp, also it does'nt matter what size the injectors are, the amount of fuel is governed by the ECU ie the "Brain", and its very clear in this case that your "Brain" could do with a remap.

Nope i've seen umpteen vw cars that were badged wrong from the factory or in terms of UK cars badged wrong by VW uk,enough to convince me never to pay any attention to the colour of badges.

    96kw is a 130pd not 110 non pd.

My mistake toss, meant to say 130, but are you sure it was factory who badged it wrong, I've seen replica stickers stuck on by dodgy importers and the odd chancer here and there. Probably only way of telling for sure is by driving.

Its a piece of paper stuck into floor of boot. If you cant tell by driving then you need to plug car into a laptop. No escaping truth then.

Also stuck into the service book, its also a pretty important and descriptive piece of paper if it wasn't there or looked forged i'd walk away from the car.

You can also check the engine code.

The AHU engine in the passat is actually quite tunable, depending on the cash you want to outlay.

You can change the injectors to Fratelli Bosio PowerPlus 520 which will up to about 110-115 bhp. More fuel, better atomisation, better burn, more power available, and better mpg when cruising.

Next step would be to remap with those injectors, you'll get about 130-135 bhp from a safe non-smokey remap, pushing no more than 17.5 psi with the OEM turbo.

For greater gains, you'll *definitely* need an uprated clutch to handle the extra torque that is possible to get. After a proper clutch and possibly an uprated flywheel, you can get a larger turbo. GT1750 is a popular AHU turbo upgrade, but you can put up to a modified Gt2250 hybrid. Injectors - up to a Race783, and a remap to control those properly. You'll need a 3bar MAP to benefit from the extra airflow.
This should get you in the region of reliable smoke-free 220-240 bhp, and still capable of >50mpg. You may need to get tyres more frequently, as an engine with these mods will easily smoke in 3rd on the dry.

Check out here for many threads of what people have done with the VP44 injection-pump I4 1.9 engines, as well as the PD engines from the newer models.

As an example of what is possible, there's one guy with a 1.9tdi block, converted for common-rail injection, and he's likely to reach >450 bhp as the parts come together.

It takes a bit more work and bit more engineering to get the diesels to be powerful machines but it is possible.
