Grandia 1 seems to be out on the PSN now, so I was wondering if it's worth playing these days? I completed Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast so I'm more or less familiar with the series, but not sure what to expect here.

Go for it. I haven't played the game in years so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I remember enjoying it immensely. The battle system is very similar to Grandia 2 and the voice acting is still there. The main difference I can think of off the top of my head is that the characters are animated sprites and so can become pixallated when the camera zooms in.

The game came on 2 discs back in the day (epic!) and the story isn't too deep or complicated. It's no Final Fantasy but JRPG fans will lap this up.

Definitely go for it. The story isn't as complicated as an FF game but it's way more charming and like a great saturday morning cartoon. The battle system though is where the game excels and it pisses all over any of the FF games in this regard. One of the best JRPGs ever made.
