It depends a bit on what kind of tool it is, engraving presumably? If it would work on MDF that might be an option, or a good quality ply, both of which you can buy in thin (from about 6mm) half sheets.

B&Q have an excellent cutting service (well the one in Waterford is) and they would cut the sheet into small manageable panels for you. They do the first 4 cuts free, but that actually works out better than it sounds. I got a half sheet of mdf cut into 10 small panels recently and they charged me about €8 for the sheet and the cutting was free.

You need to go and look at what they have and check on sheet sizes and thickness. Then plan out the cuts you want as economically as possible, remembering to consider the grain on ply - no grain on mdf. Don't ask them to do any fancy cuts, if you want to shape the piece you will have to do it yourself with a jig saw or fret saw.

Suggest you root around online for tutorials about engraving on wood, there are excellent tutorials for all kinds of crafts - Instructables.com is one site, but hunt around. Loads of videos here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW2dAaKk6Ko
