Is this with placing everywhere and is the rough cut down in your club now? You will always get much much better scores in my opinion when winter rules come in as it allows for those with a wayward game to compete on a more level playing field.
I know I can score better around this time of year than the summer, as my usual couple of wayward drives per round aren't punished and you can go for shots with impunity.
Thats not to say there aren't those out there who are taking advantage of non-qualifying!

I got 35 points last week for 14 and got no prize. I have no issue with that. 42 points won the previous week.

As has already been said Winter Golf is completely different. Placing, forward tees, mats, slow greens... it's to be expected I think and in the main there is nothing sinister about it.

Doesnt surprise me to be honest, Ive kinda lost any faith I had in the Handicap system having seen it at close hand for the last too years. No doubt theres a large number of honest players out there but there are so many .1'ers ( playing to gete their .1's back) also. It makes a mockery of the whole system.

What did he get over 18 holes

You quote 39 pts for 14 holes but it's at least over 15, you can't ignore his stratch. That leaves last 3 holes where if may have scored anything from 6 to 9 pts i guess. So in answer to your question probably mid 40's.

sorry we start our 14 holes on our 5th hole

sorry we start our 14 holes on our 5th hole

    That makes more sense :D

So basically he was 11 shots better than his handicap for the 14 holes.

So pretty much 13 pars (or equivalent) and a stratch.
Nice shooting for a guy off 17 alright but unless you know the guy it's hard to know if he's a bandit or just had his day.

I played with a guy once who had 28 pts for 9 holes, he just had his day.
Doubt he minded his handicap all year for a 50 euro voucher.
That was 2 years ago, played with him recently and he struggles to get it over 18 holes now :D

Well I played Arklow last weekend. No placing anywhere.
My H/C is 27 and never varies really, Society golfer. I had 21 points on the front 9 and finished with 35 ( the rain came in heavy around the 13th). Had 1 scratch on the 16th.
Was probaly my best game ever, but was just luck really everything seemed to go well..
As others said I wasnt hedging my scores the rest of the year for a 30 quid voucher... I promise :D

I agree though that this time of the year scores improve with placing etc.

What point are you trying to make?, the guy had a good round big deal!, I say congrats to him.

In winter rules any 18 handicapper can play par golf. why? cos it's not real golf. Most holes play on average 30-50 yards shorter, no penalty for being in the rough cos you're effectively teeing the ball up every shot. Green side chipping is so much easier with placing. Greens are slower with less break than normal which means you can give it a good rap without fear. One issue I do have with winter golf is there should only be class prizes only and not an overall prize. Lower handicap golfers have no chance of winning the overall prize in winter.

    Slightly off topic:

How many guys do you see placing the ball multiple times in winter? Once you've marked and placed the ball it's now in play and cannot be replaced again even if it falls back deeper in the rough.

I don't care what anyone says.
Whoever scores 42 points for 14 holes regardless of condition, winter rules etc is a cheater imo, playing off a false(looked after )hcp

by having such a score you're basically taking out all of the low hcp'ers out of the comp
take a player off 8 for eg,what kind of gross score would he have to shoot to compete with that sheite?

Is that so, yeah? If I told you he was about 70 and off 28 would that change things? Hardly a cheater.

I recon it's fairly narrow minded of peple to jump straight away on the call the player a "cheater" bandwagon cos he brought in a score. The guy's off a high handicap which usually indicates that he's not consistant. I'm off 9 and had some great scores on my way down and I'm certainly not a cheater. I say well done player and take no notice of the bitchyness that unfortunately surrounds golf clubs around the country!

maybe you should open your mind?

the bandit problem is putting people off golf, and it's a much bigger problem than this 'bitchyness' you mention

The problem with the word "bandit" is that it's commonly misused and incorrectly applied.
One exceptional score does not a bandit make.

    in this case you're correct
you have no prior knowledge of this particular players history, nor do i so there's no point argueing the point
everyone here knows the individuals in their clubs that are bandits,it's not an urban myth, there are those who are always in the prizes in the captains, presidents and open week etc,

Absolutely agree that there are individuals out there that magically produce great scores and that there is a trend to the timing of there high and low scores - AKA "bandits", however - the way I read the title of this thread was the fact that a player had a great round of golf and was then branded "a cheater" for his efforts.

People should understand that winter golf is much easier for high handicappers and that is why you will see some crazy scores. With placing, every ball is teed up and they dont have to try and hit irons or chip shots from horrible lies where they would normally run up big scores.

I agree with the comment that during winter golf, clubs should run competitions with prizes for each handicap class as it is very hard for low handicappers to play against high handicappers with all the help that they get from winter golf rules.

100% agree on both points. That's the sensible way of viewing it.

Most higher handicappers don't hit the ball as far as lower handicappers, so on the wet fairways with little carry the courses play longer and some par 4's become in reality par 5's. I'm not saying the preffered lies don't make it easier as they do for all handicaps.

Right... but some courses use [very] forward tees during the winter which can more than offset this. Plus mats are much more forgiving, a chopped shot or 'heavy' strike will bounce off the mat and send the ball out there. Also, how often have you seen shorter hitters carry a hybrid or fairway wood shot all the way to the green/pin, the ball stops dead or at least holds the green within 10 feet of where it pitched?

Ok, that's a bit different then, I can only speak from my limited experience where we are still using the same tees, no mats, and the rough is a 99% chance of a lost ball. Those of us who are more wayward hitters and enjoy zigzaggin our way to the hole have no chance :)

I think cheater is a bit strong if its just one score we're talking about - he had a good day, and winter golf is indeed totally different than summer golf. If its part of a pattern then thats obviously different and he could maybe be accused of being a bandit.
But I'd have to ask, if he is a bandit, why is he doing the score in a meaningless winter competition over a shortened course ? Surely a bandit does his scores in the bigger events, Capt's prize etc etc ?

I'm not sure I agree fully with extrapolating out his score from 14 holes to what he might have done over 18. OK, fair enough, 14 is close enough to a full round but I'm sure we've all done a semi decent score in an 18 hole comp and scratched 3 or 4 holes, you can't go down the road of coulda, shoulda, woulda IMO. How many times have we seen (or even done ourselves) and good front nine of maybe 22pts and then collapsed to 13 or 14 on the back for no apparent reason - its still only a total of 36 for the round, you can't argue that 22 for nine equates to 44 for the round.

We had a handicap secretary a few years ago who looked a peoples' cards and for example if a guy had, say, 35pts and scratched two holes, he used the argument "but if he'd parred those two holes he'd have had 40pts so we need to cut him" - totally wrong in my view, sure he would have, but he didn't. If Sergio had held that putt at Carnoustie he'd have won the Open, but he didn't.

Having said all that, 39pts for 14 holes is still a bid mad though !! :D

    31 for 13 0ff 9
    40 for 18
if you can score like that off 17 i call it borderline ,should be cut

Henry, I presume you're a member in Killeen too? Guessing that as 39 points won the comp on Sunday and 14 hole comps always start on the 5th...

i thought the score was a bit suspect myself, even though conditions were absolutely perfect. That's a par on every hole if he scrathched the 15th.

I know winter golf is supposed to be easier but 39 points from 14 holes???
