Trailer just out for this, looks pretty funny, I enjoyed Pineapple Express. Looks like it was filmed in Ireland in the trailer, and check out Natalie Portman's bum!!!

I actually think this looks like fun. It's obviously trying to be the next Princess Bride though.

Apparently they added cgi underwear to Portman for the trailer (she's actually wearing a thong).

Franco and McBride teaming up again and adding Deschanel and Portman to the comedy mix should be fun

Does anyone know anything about this? I remember reading a preview in Empire a couple of months ago and it looked like it had comedic potential, and now I see it's out, want to gauge other peoples opinions before I fork out 20 quid for the ladyfriend and myself to see it, I love Danny McBride in Eastbound and Down.

Saw an extended red band trailer for it last week and thought it looked horribly unfunny!

I liked the trailer, but the reviews are extremely negative.

I was so disappointed when I saw the trailer for this :( Rarely are such talented people - Portman and Deschanel (in the same place! Swoon!) as well as David Gordon Green (remember George Washington? :() - in something that looks so dreadful. The Princess Bride meets Pineapple Express isn't a good idea...

Not a great opening in the US for this just a little over 9 million

Not surprised at all it looks absolutely rubbish, i hope it flops actually as it looks like a case of getting in the hippest actors on board and not concentrating on much else assuming it'll be a huge hit.

Gotta disagree, I find her to be a one trick pony. Seems to play the kookie oddball a lot. :pac:

I dunnno what to make of this from the trailer.. loved pineapple express!!. danny mcbride is funny but that accent annoyed me after 2 minutes.. natalie portman and zoey are a plus side.. but ive seen those two scenes on black swan so it wont top that.. thong or no thong!! well maybe no thong actually... :D.

I've never wanted to be Jim Carey so much as when he got to work with her on Yes Man.

seen this yesterday, it's not innovative in any way but it's a good watch for 90 minutes or so. Some very good moments and a different sense of humour to most comedies these days. A lot of vulgarity. It's a bit disjointed in that long stretches seem to be about the story and other stretches pretty much solely comedy based, there's a bit of a lack of cohesion as a result as the story isn't particularly strong...

Worth a rent I suppose. I'll see if I can pick out any Kenny Powers-isms from Danny McBride

Have to say I enjoyed this immensley, mixed 2 of my favourite genres very well I thought. McBride and Franco work well together and have good chemistry, although McBride coasts along in Kenny Powers mode for pretty much the whole film. Natalie Portman gets better looking in every role I see her in, which helps :D

Rated poorly on Rotten Tomatoes which I usually find a good barometer, but I'd recommend it if you enjoyed Pineapple Express.

This was the biggest pile of sh*t I have ever seen.

It's terrible. Really. I've never felt so angry at wasting a tenner.

It's an hour and forty minutes of d!ck jokes and related innuendo that seemed to be written by a spotty teenager. The only redeeming feature of this was that Natalie Portman looked absolutely amazing.

    Don't go to this. 1/10.

Yeah I don't think there's a middle road with this film!! And I can see why you hated it.

I actually enjoyed it! It was totally vulgar and utterly stupid, but I like that sometimes - especially when it's Kenny Powers delivering the lines! :)

And yes, Natalie was stunning looking!

Ah, don't get me wrong I do like a range comedies so I'm not a complete snob when it comes to the genre (although I agree with different strokes!).

I do like McBride in support roles and he's great in Eastbound and Down. It just never changed it's tune. The jokes were vile, crass and childish. I'd be highly embarrassed if I brought my sixteen year old brother to this!

just back from seeing this myself and i thought it was a great laugh.

im actually quite surprised at how well it works as a fantasy film. the effects were great and as a bloke who grew up on stuff like clash of the titans and dragon slayer i appreciate the influences and nods of the heads in it that reference them without mocking em.

yes its childish dick jokes but its not as over the top as i feared it would be and the fight scenes were done very well for whats primareally a comedy.

on a pure sexist level theres some collection of tits on display at times and portman looked gorgeous. ive never really fancied the girl but my god she looked fantastic at times in this and its great to see her play such a different role.

its no princess bride, but its not trying for that type of humour, it zips along at a nice pace and you DO genuinely belive franco and mcbride are siblings in these roles

    i'd give it 7/10

ya wont fall off the chair laughing ,but its got its good bits (for some reason
the scene with him off his head with his servent and a local chasing sheep around a field had me in stitches :)
) and while the humour is vulgar, its also a fairly charming film too.

    kinda surprised at that.

I know what you mean. I saw a mother and daughter (around 16/17) leaving at the end and thought: ''my God I couldn't imagine watching that with my mam!''

Best comedy ever in the past few years. I loved it. Its like they took all things in my mind which I like or find funny and made it into a film. The characters were brilliant, the humour was right up my alley, and mega kudos for having a puppet for a wizard instead of some sh1t cgi. In addition the vfx was very good and used appropriately. Excellent film, 11/10.

Really wanted to like it cos i'm a big fan of fantasy films that have monsters, legend etc etc. But it just didnt work, 90% of the jokes weren't funny enough to make you laugh, you get the joke but it dosent have the full effect. A lot of jokes were kind of awkward in that they took a sentence or two to tell, rather than quick snappy jokes.

I have to say the effects were very good for a comedy film. I liked the fact they used a puppet for the Wise Wizard but the whole
    perv
thing was a bit needless really, a bit cringeworthy.

Must say I was in stitches at the Stephen character. Thought it was an hilarious addition.

Ok I'm going to resort to spelling out a few of the "jokes" to cement my loathing. Now I do like these tricks in moderation, but it was the whole f*cking film full of them.....and the delivery.

I'll spoiler them just in case. But a bit pointless really.
Everything was phallic and childish. Everything. The dialogue. The tower, the wizard (his head). The scene where it was told that yer man used to jump up and down on the bed shirtless (not funny). The minotaur r*pe, the subsequent d!ck chop. The "suck your own venom" bit that was in the trailer. The "getting high and chasing sheep" scene that was just f*cking stupid. The woodlands people (I'll agree it was awesome seeing bewbs. But that whole capture scene wasn't funny either). The evil warlock fella, not an ounce of laughter did I get from him.

I should've known when it started with him being hanged by midgets that this was going to suck. Also what really annoyed me was their voiceovers at the starting credits. Seemed like they were just ad libbing the stupid sh!t that was happening in the cartoon while also trying to mix in some sparsely related dialogue.

Can't remember the last time I was embarrassed to be seen leaving the cinema.

I think I laughed at the warlocks' 'Banquet', and that is it.
Big stack of fish fingers, he's only 19.

It's not just that the jokes were lukewarm, the characters were unbelievable. It was like bad acting, but these actors are usually very good. (McBride was brilliant in Pineapple Express, his shaved armpits gave him speed ROFL).

If you don't believe the characters, or feel for them, it feels like a waste of their time, and mine. A comedy that's not funny is almost the worst type of film.

And btw, that wasn't Portmans' rear in the film, but an Irish girls'. (body double)

    I give it 1/10. Embarrassing.

Wasn't it just the part where she goes into the freezing water that the Irish girl was used? I'm pretty sure it was Portman standing on the edge.

The best part of the film was Justin Theroux as Leezar, he was ott but very funny imo

Portman and Franco were wasted and Portman looked way too young to be McBride's character's love interest

Feck sakes, did we watch the same movie? Was a terrible pile of sh!t so it was. :pac:

I couldn't really concentrate on the "story" (see what I did?) when there was another dick joke in the space of two minutes.

Second film I've seen this year in the cinema.

I enjoyed it for what it was. As other posters put above it's immature, but it's supposed to be. It's a fanboy homage to old movies like Clash of the Titans, Labyrtinth, Lord of the Rings, Krull and the like. Some nice nods there. Yes, very vulgar and very often stupid, but also some bits were quite well done. Scenery looked great.

Surprising good bits in the film but overall I think it's going to be one I'll see again with a couple of beers on DVD. Looked like a fun film to make though - the actors looked like they were taking the p155 and knew it and enjoyed it all the more.

    Zooey Deschanel is gorgeous.

Marks out of 10? 5. Really depends on what sort of film you like.

Went to see this last night and thought it was very good... Definitely not a film for the critics though. Some very funny bits in it and I think some of the criticisms of it are a bit harsh. It is what it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,561 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I liked this film more than I did Pineapple Express. It wasn’t the funniest film but it had so many action sequences that I tended not to notice that fact. I agree that McBride was annoying but that didn’t ruin the film for me. It’s more an average than a bad film

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 688 ✭✭✭Sútalún

I dunno, I didn't go in expecting an Oscar-worthy story line, or intricate comedic sequences, and I actually enjoyed it. Thought the actors played their parts well. But hey, I'm no critic.
